Belarus National Olympic Committee Calls US Sanctions Absurd

The National Olympic Committee of Belarus condemned the sanctions imposed by the American Government. According to them, the sanctions given are baseless and absurd.

"We will greatly appreciate our American colleagues if they can show evidence (which is the basis for sanctions)," said the Belarus National Olympic Committee in a press statement, Tuesday, August 10, 2021.

As previously reported, US President Joe Biden has imposed new sanctions on the government of Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko, a week after the issue of the forced repatriation of Tokyo Olympic athlete Kristina Timanovskaya surfaced.

Joe Biden signed an executive order for the sanctions on Monday. The sanctions from Joe Biden will target individuals and entities in Belarus.
From an individual perspective, several officials of the Belarus National Olympic Committee were targeted. The US Treasury Department said committee officials facilitated money laundering, sanctions evasion, corruption, and fraud. That's what the Belarus Olympic Committee is concerned about.

"They do not consider that the activities of the National Olympic Committee of Belarus are audited in detail by the International Olympic Committee and its supporting agencies."

"The decision was based on political motives. If the International Olympic Committee is not involved, then the imposition of sanctions is absolutely absurd. We see America's decision as baseless," they added.
