Pfizer and Moderna Will Raise Billions of Dollars from Covid-19 Booster Vaccines

Drugmakers Pfizer Inc, BioNTech and Moderna Inc are expected to make billions of dollars from the Covid-19 booster injection or vaccine. The coronavirus booster vaccine is expected to rival the $6 billion annual sales of the flu vaccine in the coming years, according to health analysts and investors.

For several months, the company said people injected with the full COVID-19 vaccine would need a booster to maintain protection and fend off the delta variant. Moreover, a number of countries have stated that they will offer booster doses to their citizens who have low immune systems to ward off the highly contagious Delta variant of Covid-19.

During this year and 2022, Pfizer, together with its German partners BioNTech, and Moderna achieved more than US$60 billion in sales of their Covid-19 vaccine. The supply is for the initial two doses of the Covid-19 vaccine as well as the potential billions of dollars of booster vaccine for rich countries.

By 2023, analysts expect Pfizer and BioNTech to generate more than $6.6 billion in revenue from booster injections. While Moderna amounted to US $ 7.6 billion. For the coming years, sales of boosters are predicted to be around US$ 5 billion or more.
Pfizer declined to comment on revenue from the COVID-19 booster vaccine. In the second quarter, Pfizer only said it took 6-8 months after vaccination for a booster shot.

Meanwhile, Moderna President Stephen Hoge said in an interview last week that he did not know about market forces. "At some point this will be a more traditional market, the population at risk, the value created and the number of products. It will ultimately have an impact on prices," he said.
