Do you'll need a builder but don't know where to show? If that's the case, these techniques for selecting the most appropriate builder for the project may help.
1. REFERRALS
When possible, it is a great idea to have referrals from friends and family plumbers in my area. I don't mean 'I understand a guy' type recommendations, but actual samples of work they've already been carried out. Ask what the builders were like. Were they reliable? Hard-working? Punctual? Cost-effective?
2. NATIONAL FEDERATION OF BUILDERS (NFB)
The NFB has 14 offices around the country, who provides you a list of registered building companies in your area.
3. READ REVIEWS
There are several places to have reviews, but online business directories is actually a great spot to start. While you may not want to place your whole faith in what other folks say, a broad consensus of opinion could prove extremely useful.
4. GET REFERENCES
Once you've engaged a designer, ask for several references from previous customers. If you are able to contact these people, even better. It's also recommended to ask for photographs of other jobs they've worked on. Or, ask if they've done any near your house that you can go and have a nosy at!
5. OBTAIN ESTIMATES
Let 3 or 4 builders price up the job you have in mind. Some are cheaper than others, but it's up to you how you interpret that. Likewise, don't judge the most expensive too harshly - they could be the best by some distance. Your builders must also let you know if you want planning permission.
