After Vikings Valhalla, we have another historical drama series to look forward to on Netflix. The Last Kingdom is a popular television series based on The Saxon Stories novel series. The show basically revolves around the conflict between Vikings and Anglo-Saxons. So, if you loved watching History’s Vikings and its sequel Vikings Valhalla, then you must watch the first four seasons of The Last Kingdom.

The previous seasons of The Last Kingdom grabbed the attention of millions of fans. Well, the show is now back with a fifth season to conclude the story.

It’s been an agonising two-year wait for fans but The Last Kingdom is finally due to land on our screens.

Season 4 of the historical drama aired way back in April 2020 and so fans are understandably eager to binge-watch the new instalment as soon as it arrives.

The Last Kingdom is a Netflix Original historical-fiction drama, based on The Saxon Stories by author Bernard Cornwell. The series was once a co-production between the British broadcaster BBC and Netflix, but since the third season, the series production has been entirely handled by Netflix.

While Netflix has never released viewing figures for the series, season 4 was added to Netflix at a time where Netflix top 10s were available. In total, the series spent 25 days in the UK top 10 and 20 days in the US top 10.

Netflix confirmed that Season 5 of The Last Kingdom would feature a total of ten episodes. The show usually gets episodes with a runtime of around 50-55 minutes, so it’s safe to assume that the upcoming season will also follow the same trend.

Also, it’s official that the upcoming season will be the final one, so it’s the end of the road for The Last Kingdom after the fifth installment.

The new instalment of The Last Kingdom continues the story of Uhtred but it’s been several years since the bloody twists and turns of season 4 and the climactic battle at Winchester.

King Edward still reigns but his ambition to unite the Saxon Kingdoms faces considerable challenges thanks to a new Danish invasion and a rebellion among the Saxons.

As Edward treads a fine line in trying to bring peace, Uhtred learns that the quest to unite England may well be closely linked to his own personal destiny.

The new episodes will be released at midnight Pacific Time in the US and like most Netflix releases, season 5 will arrive at the same time around the world.

The Last Kingdom has officially been renewed for its fifth season on Netflix but with the caveat that it will be the show’s last. We’ll come onto this more in a second but anyone who knows the source material for The Last Kingdom will know how much content from the books won’t get to be covered.
