Manchester United ready to part ways with Cristiano Ronaldo

The 2022 January transfer window is closed, but there's still plenty of gossip swirling about who's moving where. Transfer Talk brings you all the latest buzz on rumours, comings and goings and, of course, done deals!

TOP STORY: Man United happy to let Ronaldo walk
Manchester United are ready to let Cristiano Ronaldo leave at the end of the season -- if he decides that he wants to.

The Sunday Express reveals that the club will not stand in his way even though he has another 12 months on his contract, with belief that his future may depend on whether or not they qualify for the Champions League.

The 37-year-old striker broke one of the longest goal droughts of his career in the Red Devils' 2-0 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday, but despite being in fourth position in the Premier League, Ralf Rangnick's side are under pressure from Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur.

Ronaldo has scored nine goals in 21 league appearances this season.

22.00 GMT: That'll do it for our Transfer Talk blog today, but we'll be right back with tomorrow's paper roundup and do the whole live thing all over again on Monday. Thanks as always for checking in.

21.10 GMT: Despite suffering a last-gasp defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round-of-16 match, Real Madrid aren't panicking and won't let anything affect their transfer plans this summer. Marca says that Los Blancos' plans to move for both PSG striker Kylian Mbappe and Dortmund front man Erling Haaland are still in place.

The report adds that Real expect to see Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Isco depart on free transfers at the end of their contracts, while Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio could leave in deals with potential suitors this summer.

20.15 GMT: El Nacional reports that both Chelsea and Liverpool are monitoring the situation of rising Barcelona star Gavi. The 17-year-old, who has started 16 games this in LaLiga this season under Xavi, has a contract with the club until 2023, but with talks over a new deal yet to begin, the Premier League giants are hopeful of luring him to England.

Gavi played 71 minutes for Barcelona on Sunday, as they steamrolled Valencia 4-1 in LaLiga and made ESPN's recent list of players representing the Blaugrana's next golden generation at the Camp Nou.

19.25 GMT: Former Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere has joined Danish side AGF Aarhus on a free transfer until the end of the season, the club announced on Sunday.

Wilshere had been training with Arsenal while he looked for a new club after leaving Championship side Bournemouth last summer.

Aarhus sports manager Stig Inge Bjornebye said in a statement: "Jack needs no further presentation, and he has shown his worth on both club and national teams over the past 10 years.

"So when the opportunity arose to get him here to Aarhus, we had no doubt that we would like to pursue it."

The 30-year-old made 198 appearances during his 10-year career at Arsenal, where he twice won the FA Cup. He has also had spells at Bolton Wanderers and West Ham United.

18.35 GMT: Crystal Palace are looking closely at Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez, the Sun reports. Ajax are reportedly willing to let Alvarez go for around £20 million.

The 24-year-old Mexico international is a highly regarded defensive midfielder who has caught the interest of West Ham in the past. He has been with Ajax since 2019 and before that played for Mexican powerhouse Club America.

17.38 GMT: The Houston Dynamo have their eye on Atletico Madrid midfielder Hector Herrera, according to a writer for Major League Soccer's website. The MLS club has put an offer on the table for Herrera, but it's as yet unclear if the Mexico international reciprocates the interest.

Herrera, 31, joined Atletico in 2019 and in December surpassed Javier "Chicharito" Hernandez as the Mexican with most UEFA Champions League appearances. Herrera has 93 caps for Mexico.

16.40 GMT: Raphinha came off the bench to score for Leeds United against Manchester United on Sunday, and the Sunday Mirror reports that any club hoping to sign the Brazilian may have to wait another year.

Raphinha, 25, has been strongly linked with Liverpool over the past few months, though a whole host of clubs would be ready to sign the midfielder if he became available.

But the report says that Leeds are eager to extend the player's contract, and will not entertain any transfer under January 2023 at the earliest. He has also been linked with a move to Man United as well as Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Leeds are hoping that Raphinha will star for Brazil at the World Cup at the end of the year, thus inflating his transfer fee.

15.35 GMT: Liverpool may have a tough choice to make this summer. Star forward Mohamed Salah has less than 18 months left on his reported £200,000-a-week contract; as he turns 30 in June, the club may need to let him leave if they are to avoid losing him for free in 2023.

Salah is one of the best players in the Premier League and Liverpool won't want to see him depart, but they may have to make him English football's first ever £500,000-a-week player -- a salary which would even exceed that of Manchester United's Cristiano Ronaldo, who earns a reported £480,000-a-week.

The club's recruitment over recent seasons has been spectacular, with January's £37.5m addition of winger Luis Diaz the latest in a long line of top quality signings. But who could the Reds turn to in the summer transfer window to replace Salah if they have to?

14.30 GMT: Nabil Fekir has emerged as a transfer target for Barcelona, according to Marca.

Fekir, 28, was a key transfer target for Arsenal during his time at Lyon, but he eventually moved to Real Betis in the summer of 2019 for a reported transfer fee of €20m, plus another €10m in add-ons.

Three years on, and Europe's biggest clubs continue to be linked. Marca reports that Betis value the attacking midfielder at €100m, and as such it is highly unlikely he will depart Seville in the next window.

AC Milan, Juventus, Tottenham Hotspur and Valencia are also named as potential suitors.

13.25 GMT: ESPN FC's Shaka Hislop praises Harry Kane following Tottenham's 3-2 victory over Manchester City in the Premier League -- and he wonders what the player's transfer value is based on that performance alone!

12.32 GMT: New Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Rodrigo Bentancur has revealed that Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani helped persuade him to move to England.

Bentancur, 24, joined Spurs from Juventus on transfer deadline day last month, making the switch for a reported transfer fee of €19m, plus €6m in add-ons.

The player told Sky Sports that while playing in the Premier League had been an ambition, former Liverpool forward Suarez and current Manchester United striker Cavani told him now was the time to make the move.

"I was following my [transfer] situation while on international duty, and as soon as Luis Suarez found out that there was a possibility of me coming to play in the Premier League, and for Tottenham, he made himself available to give me as much information as I required," Bentancur revealed.

"Suarez said it would be a great move for me and it would help me both professionally and personally. If I needed anything, he was willing to help me out.

"Edinson Cavani got involved too. I asked him, even though he will be an opponent, and he said it was a spectacular league to play in and it would benefit me greatly.

"They both said what a fantastic league it was. I knew it was a big step in my career, so to get information and background on the league was very important. It was a decision that I didn't hesitate in taking."

11.30 GMT: According to the Sunday Mirror, Arsenal are interested in Napoli midfielder Fabian Ruiz.

Ruiz, 25, began his career at Real Betis before moving to the Serie A club in the summer of 2018. Mike Arteta has been tracking the Spain international for some time and hopes to bring him to the Emirates in the summer.

He only has one year remaining on his Napoli contract, and has rejected offers of an extension. That means Arsenal could be able to get the player on a cut-price deal at the end of the season, with a transfer fee of £16m mooted. Barcelona and Real Madrid are also said to be interested.

10.26 GMT: Tuttomercatoweb reports that Juventus still want to keep striker Alvaro Morata -- but cannot afford the €35 transfer fee agreed with Atletico Madrid when he joined Juve on a two-year loan in the summer of 2020.

Juve are going to have to make a decision on 29-year-old striker soon. Arsenal are also reported to be interested and could make a move if Juve cannot make Morata's deal permanent.

Morata has hardly been prolific in Serie A, with 16 goals in 57 appearances -- only five of those coming this season. Juve are prepared to offer a revised transfer fee of just €15m plus bonuses, which they feel is more realistic.

09.30 GMT: Liverpool tried their best to sign Fulham teenager Fabio Carvalho in January, in an attempt to steal a march on rival clubs. They couldn't agree a deal with the West London club, and that means the 19-year-old will have his pick of all interested teams when his contract expires in a few months.

Carvalho, 19, is seen as one of the most exciting prospects in the Championship. Liverpool offered £5m to sign the attacking midfielder last month, but Fulham are hoping they may get more in the summer through a transfer tribunal if compensation cannot be agreed.

Now the Star on Sunday reports that arch rivals Manchester United are one of the clubs ready to enter the race for the Portugal-born, England under-18 international

PAPER GOSSIP
- Manchester United are set to trigger Diogo Dalot's contract extension clause, reveals the Daily Star. The 22-year-old full-back has been in impressive form and, with just 15 months remaining on his deal, the club are ready to extend. Dalot has made 15 appearances in the Premier League this season.

- Eder Militao wants to remain at Real Madrid, according to Marca. The 24-year-old centre-back attracting interest from Chelsea recently, but the latest suggests that he wants to sign a new contract and continue his career at the Santiago Bernabeu. Militao has been a stalwart in Carlo Ancelotti's side this season, making 34 appearances across all competitions.

- Newcastle United are already considering activating the permanent option for Matt Targett, reports Rudy Galetti. Manager Eddie Howe acquired the 26-year-old left-back on loan during January, and after already impressing during his time at St James' Park, he could now be set to stay beyond his initial loan spell.

- Barcelona are willing to offer Erling Haaland a €20 million per season salary package if he agrees to move to Camp Nou. Sport writes that the LaLiga club are ready to trigger his release clause of €75m when it becomes active in the summer, and that they will also offer the 21-year-old striker a salary review once their financial situation improves.

- Plenty of speculation has surrounded the future of Noussair Mazraoui in recent weeks, and it looks as though Borussia Dortmund are ready to make a move for his services, according to Nicolo Schira. The Bundesliga club are prepared to offer the 24-year-old defender a four-year deal that would see him make the switch from Ajax at the end of the season. He has also been linked with Barcelona.
