Belarus President Lukashenko Turns Out To Be Refused To Attend Tokyo Olympics

Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko's bad record regarding the Tokyo Olympics is not only related to the expulsion of runner Krystsina Tsimanouskaya (Kristina Timanovskaya). He also had problems with the International Olympic Committee (KOI) which resulted in him not being accepted into any Tokyo Olympic events.

KOI made the decision in December 2020. KOI President Thomas Bach thought that Lukashenko did not protect his athletes from political discrimination, and even participated in the persecution. Ironically, said Bach, Lukashenko is also a managing officer of the Belarusian National Olympic Committee headed by his son.

The decision reflected a series of efforts by the Belarusian Government to silence the actions of its citizens after the 2020 presidential election. In that presidential election, Alexander Lukashenko claimed victory, but the majority of Belarusians (including athletes) doubted it. They believed that Lukashenko had cheated, which the president retaliated against.

"This goes against the basic principles of the Olympic charter and could therefore have a serious impact on the reputation of the Olympics going forward," Bach said in December.
Shortly after KOI blacklisted Lukashenko, Belarus' status as host of the 2021 World Hockey Tournament was also revoked. In fact, the KOI withheld all talk of holding world events in Belarus.

Despite severely punishing the Lukashenko Government, KOI is still trying to ensure Belarusian athletes can compete in this year's Tokyo Olympics, including Timanovskaya. They even provide scholarship assistance that is paid directly to athletes, not to national committees

Not being able to come to the Olympics by Alexander Lukashenko is not a new experience. In 2012 he was also unable to attend the London Olympics. The European Union refused to grant him a visa. For the politician who is also an athlete, Lukashenko regrets the decision.
