Sapphire resists scratches and shatters under sharp impact. Mineral glass scratches easily and absorbs shock without breaking. Neither is universally better, and a brand fitting mineral to a watch at this price is making a choice rather than cutting a corner, though it is usually sold as the latter.
A catalogue audit of 49 live listings from one German aviation brand found sapphire referenced in only three of them. Twenty-three of the 49 are automatic. That combination, mechanical movements behind mineral glass, is unusual enough to be worth explaining rather than assuming it is a saving.

The movement mix is the interesting part. A range carrying both Swiss ETA and Sellita automatics alongside Ronda quartz and Miyota automatics is a brand buying the right calibre per model rather than standardising, which is the opposite of the microbrand approach.
Why a domed crystal changes the calculation
Bauhaus dials are usually paired with a domed crystal, and a dome behaves differently from a flat crystal under impact.
A domed mineral crystal distributes a strike across a curved surface rather than concentrating it at one point. A domed sapphire does the same but, being harder and more brittle, is more likely to crack through rather than mark.
Domes also distort at the edges, bending the outer minute track when viewed off-axis, which is part of the look and the reason vintage-styled watches use them. Antireflective coating matters more on a dome than on a flat crystal, because a curved surface catches light from more angles.
Sapphire-coated is a third category and the one most often misread. It is mineral glass with a hardened surface layer, resisting light scratching better than bare mineral while chipping through to softer material under a hard knock.
The hardness numbers
Mineral glass sits around 5 on the Mohs scale, hardened mineral around 7, and sapphire at 9. Steel sits around 4.5 and ordinary sand is about 7, which is why beach exposure scratches mineral crystals and not sapphire ones.
Against that, sapphire's fracture toughness is lower. It takes less energy to crack a sapphire crystal than to crack mineral of the same thickness, and a cracked crystal is a replacement while a scratched one is cosmetic.
A replacement crystal is usually inexpensive on a mineral watch and more costly on a sapphire one, which compounds the difference in the direction people do not expect.
Thickness changes the calculation again. A thicker crystal of either material resists cracking better, and domed crystals are thicker at the centre than flat ones by construction. That is part of why vintage-styled watches with high domes survive knocks that flatter modern designs do not.
Antireflective coating sits on top of all of this. Applied to the inside face it lasts the life of the watch. Applied to the outside it wears off in patches within a couple of years, and a partly worn coating is harder to read through than none at all.
Creation Watches states the crystal material on each listing.

What Bauhaus actually requires on a dial
Function determines form, which on a dial means nothing appears that does not help you read the time.
That gives you high contrast, usually black on white or white on black. Sans-serif numerals with even stroke weight. A railroad minute track rather than decorative indices. No applied markers competing with the numerals. And no text beyond the brand name, because a model name and a specification line printed on a dial are ornament.
Most watches marketed as Bauhaus fail at least two of those. A dial with four lines of text and applied batons is minimal, not Bauhaus, and the difference is worth knowing before paying for the association.
Other German-influenced ranges sit in the Zeppelin collection.
Mechanical alternatives run through the automatic watches range.
Who this suits
If your watch spends time in workshops, on ladders or near concrete, mineral glass survives what sapphire does not and costs less to replace when it finally goes. If it lives between a desk and a dinner table, sapphire is the better material and the scratch resistance is the whole point.
Frequently asked questions
Is sapphire always better than mineral glass?
No. Sapphire resists scratching far better, sitting at 9 on the Mohs scale against mineral's 5, but it has lower fracture toughness and cracks more readily under sharp impact. Mineral absorbs shock and scratches instead, which is preferable in rough conditions.
What is sapphire-coated glass?
Mineral glass with a hardened surface layer rather than a solid sapphire crystal. It resists light scratching better than bare mineral, but chips and deeper scratches reach the softer glass beneath, and it cannot be polished out the way a mineral crystal sometimes can.
Why do Bauhaus watches use domed crystals?
Partly for the period look and partly because a dome distributes impact across a curved surface rather than concentrating it. Domes distort at the edges, which is characteristic of the style, and they need good antireflective treatment because they catch light from more angles.
What makes a dial genuinely Bauhaus?
High contrast, sans-serif numerals with even stroke weight, a railroad minute track, no applied markers competing with numerals, and no text beyond the brand name. A minimal dial carrying four lines of text and applied batons is minimal rather than Bauhaus.
Can a scratched mineral crystal be polished?
Light scratches often can, using a fine polishing compound, which is one of mineral glass's practical advantages. Deep scratches need replacement, but a mineral crystal is inexpensive to replace compared with sapphire on the same case. This is worth checking before buying rather than after.
Why would a brand fit mineral glass to an automatic watch?
Because impact resistance can matter more than scratch resistance depending on intended use, and because a domed mineral crystal is cheaper to replace. In an audit of 49 live listings from one German aviation brand, only three referenced sapphire while 23 were automatic.
