Joe Biden reportedly considering Boston Mayor Marty Walsh as Labor secretary

Speculation about Martin Walsh being tapped as President-elect Joe Biden's Labor secretary is swirling anew, but a Democratic insider is downplaying to the Herald the likelihood of the Boston mayor heading to Washington.

Biden "definitely wants Marty Walsh" to lead the Labor Department, a person familiar with his team's deliberations told Politico. And the mayor, a former labor union leader, reportedly has the backing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

But the incoming president is facing pressure to add even more diversity to a rapidly filling Cabinet already full of historic picks. And that could diminish the prospects for Walsh, who is white, according to the Politico report.

Both Walsh's office and his campaign team declined comment Wednesday.

Walsh batted away rumors about possibly becoming Labor secretary during a press conference late last month, saying he was looking forward to working with the Biden administration "as mayor for the many years to come."

A Democratic operative told the Herald there's "no question that Biden likes" Walsh — the two have forged a relationship over the years and the former vice president even spoke at Walsh's second-term inauguration. Plus, one of Walsh's former press aides, Emma Riley, went to work for Biden's campaign in New Hampshire and Pennsylvania and is now part of the incoming White House staff.

But the Democratic source said there's "no reason to believe anything has changed" in regards to Walsh's comments about remaining in the Hub.

Walsh has yet to announce whether he'll run for a third term next year, though he's appeared to take steps in that direction by hiring campaign staff and shelling out $40,000 last month for polling. He'd be a formidable incumbent, with nearly $6 million in his war chest at the end of November, according to his latest filing with the state Office of Campaign and Political Finance.

But if he leaves, he'd likely upend not just the mayor's race but Boston politics at large.

Two candidates have already launched campaigns for mayor — At-Large City Councilor Michelle Wu and District 4 City Councilor Andrea Campbell. Either Campbell, who's Black, or Wu, who's of Asian descent, would be the first person who isn't a white man to run the city. And others are already eyeing their council seats.
