Earth Magnets - Characteristics, Types and Application

Earth magnets, especially those of the rare type, are strong versions of magnets coming from rare earth alloys or elements. These became popular as they were developed in the turn of the 70's and 80's. They are considered stronger than other magnetizers made out of alnico and ferrite. The strength of these magnets is explained as follows.

Earth magnets and their strength may be attributed to a lot of traits. First is the mere fact that their crystalline structures are only focused on magnetizing particles in one direction than in multiple directions. Because of this, the magnets are not overused thus making it strong and have the capability to extend their lives. In other words, they are able to serve their purpose for a longer period of time. Other than strength, there are yet some things to know baby gifts  this product.

Characteristics of these magnets

In the world of magnets, there are several properties used to compare one from the other. The first on the list is remanence or that particular factor used to indicate the magnetic field's strength. Another is coercivity or the magnet's capacity to resist demagnetization. Curie temperature or the degree of temperature when the material tends to lose its magnetic properties is often measured in the context of comparing one or two forms of magnets. Of course, the magnetic energy's density is also being regarded. In all these aspects, earth magnets prevail because they have higher remanence, magnetic density and coercivity though seen to have lower Curie temperatures.

Types of magnets falling under this category

There are actually two types of magnets in the earth magnet category - first is the samarium cobalt and the other is the neodymium. The samarium cobalt is the very first type of earth magnet that has been developed by science. They are more expensive and are weaker than neodymium. This is the reason why they have not been manufactured in large-scale industries. Its advantage over neodymium is its higher Curie temperature making it capable of maintaining its magnetic properties.

A look at its applications

Just like other industrial products, earth magnets are now recognized all over the globe because of the many industries that favor the use of these items. The most common applications include the manufacture of audio speakers, computer hard drives, fishing reel brakes and bicycle dynamos. Other applications where the product is utilized include wider scales such as wind turbines, diamagnetic levitation experiments, launched roller coasters and stop motion animations.
