Doctor Strange 2's trailer has spawned many multiverse theories, but the most shocking is a theory that Strange causes Professor X's Logan dementia.
One startling new fan theory suggests Doctor Strange 2's multiverse events cause Professor X's Logan dementia. Set for a domestic May 6th, 2022 release date, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness continues the multiverse-centric events set up by Spider-Man: No Way Home, with Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) desperately attempting to fix his magical mistakes. As a result, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is primed to introduce multiverse variants of numerous Marvel entities, with Patrick Stewart's Charles Xavier the latest character confirmed to appear.
Doctor Strange 2 will mark Patrick Stewart's eighth appearance as the X-Men's leader Charles Xavier, although the size of his role in the MCU film remains to be seen. The Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer shows a bald man from behind saying, "we should tell him the truth" as Strange is brought before the MCU's Illuminati to answer for his crimes against reality. This voice unmistakably belongs to Stewart, who seems to have far more of his critical faculty than when audiences last saw Xavier's character in Logan in 2017.
Off the back of this trailer, one Doctor Strange 2 theory (via Reddit user BRispin) suggests that Charles Xavier will sacrifice his sanity via Cerebro to fix Strange's multiverse issues - causing him to become the diminished version of Charles Xavier audiences see in Logan. This would certainly act as a link to the movie that ends Xavier's story, with the events in-between X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan largely shrouded in mystery. As a result, here's the Doctor Strange 2 Professor X theory explained and how it ties into Charles Xavier's other canon movie appearances.

Charles Xavier's Doctor Strange 2 Return Confirmed
While the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness Super Bowl trailer left Professor X's MCU entrance up for debate for several weeks, Patrick Stewart has since confirmed the first official appearance of a mutant in the MCU. In an interview with Jakes Takes, Stewart states that he "didn't recognize" his own voice in the trailer before saying he was "astonished" at the reaction to his minute amount of screen time in the Multiverse of Madness trailer. The ramifications of Professor X's inclusion in the MCU are understandably huge, opening the door for the other X-Men to make their way into the franchise. While Stewart remains coy for now regarding the details of his Doctor Strange 2 role, such as if the Professor X shown is a variant or the original Fox movies' character, the magnitude of his interactions with Strange in the multiverse cannot be undersold.
Where The X-Men Movies Leave Charles Xavier's Character (Including Logan)
The Charles Xaviers depicted at the end of X-Men: Days of Future Past and Logan are in radically different positions despite just six years passing between the two films canonically. X-Men: Days of Future Past ends on an idyllic scene, with Logan (Hugh Jackman) waking up at Xavier's school in 2023 to find all of his X-Men brethren alive and well, indicating that he managed to save the mutants' futures. This even applies to characters that had previously perished in X-Men: The Last Stand, with Jean Grey (Famke Janssen) and Scott Summers (James Marsden) alive and well in this new continuity, watched over by a smiling Charles Xavier.
However, just six years later, this same timeline displays a decidedly dystopian vision in Logan, which takes place in 2029. Logan explains that most of the X-Men were inadvertently killed by Xavier in a seizure-induced psychic attack one year earlier, and the mutant population is dwindling because of the Transigen virus. The Professor X shown in Logan is in his 90s and suffering from dementia which causes him to lose control of his powerful telepathic abilities via seizures. Yet Logan does little to explain Xavier's rapid mental decline in such a short span of time, hinting that there is more in play than just his mental age taking its toll in this X-Men continuity.
Why Doctor Strange 2'S Multiverse Causes Xavier's Dementia
In this way, Charles Xavier's actions in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness could well cause his dementia, turning him into the diminished character depicted in Logan. This theory posits that Xavier's Cerebro will likely come into play, with the mental strain of using the Earth-based device in the multiverse realms causing irreparable damage to Xavier's brain. This is where this theory then diverges, with two distinct schools of thought on exactly what Xavier's end-use of Cerebro in The Multiverse of Madness is.
The first theory here is that Professor X uses Cerebro to undo Doctor Strange's misuse of the multiverse, fracturing his mind in line with the multiverse's infinite timelines. This action is certainly in keeping with Patrick Stewart and James McAvoy's portrayals of Xavier in the Fox movies' timelines, with Professor X willing to protect both his fellow mutants and innocent lives at all costs. Conversely, the other side of this theory is that Professor X damages his mind by more nefarious means, such as attempting to control Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) or Doctor Strange. This line of thinking also better aligns with the Illuminati teased in the Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness trailer, given that Illuminati members such as Superior Iron Man are considered evil versions of their original counterparts. In this way, Professor X's attempts to control sorcerors whose powers outstrip his own could end in tragedy, causing all versions and variants of Charles Xavier to suffer as a result.
In either case, this Charles Xavier theory is a fitting way to bring back both Wolverine and Xavier for a single outing via the multiverse without ruining their Fox character arcs - which feel complete. This, in turn, leaves the MCU free to recast these two iconic characters at a later date without denying fans the opportunity to see Jackman and Stewart reprise their beloved roles one last time. Doctor Strange 2 has spawned many wild, multiverse-centric theories, but Professor X's Logan dementia link feels like one that could feasibly be implemented for the MCU phase 4 movie.
