Foothill High School football coach Joey Brown sat at his desk last Tuesday in Room 306 where he teaches social science.
Brown's room is a pebble's throw from the red and black turf field that has remained empty since the coronavirus pandemic stopped all athletics back in March 2020 in an attempt to curb the virus' spread.

Now Brown is pushing to have all sports return as contact sports like football, basketball, soccer, baseball, wrestling and volleyball remain suspended in California due to the coronavirus.

"There's a lot of students who come to school for more than just their classes," Brown said. "They come for the social experiences but for some, sports is the motivating factor."

Brown is working with the Golden State High School Football Coaches Community — a coalition of 275 football coaches from across the state — to appeal to state health officials in allowing all sports to return to full competition.

Led by Serra of Palo Alto High School football coach Patrick Walsh, the group wrote a letter to Gov. Gavin Newsom on Jan. 19. It also sent letters to California Health and Human Services Secretary Dr. Mark Ghaly and Newsom's executive secretary Jim DeBoo.
"We have watched over 40 states compete in youth sports right now," said Walsh. "All of the data from those states suggest that youth sports are safe. It's not perfect, there have been games rescheduled and some have been canceled but a majority of those games have been completed."

Nonetheless, Bay Area health officials last month announced 90 COVID cases were linked to a youth basketball tournament played in November indoors in Placer County.
