PVMBG Says They Have Give Early Warning Before Semeru Erupts

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) revealed that it had issued an early warning before Mount Semeru erupted on Saturday, December 4, 2021. The warning was issued along with 69 other active volcanoes.

"Early warnings for the danger of volcanic eruptions have been carried out not only in Semeru, but also in 69 active volcanoes monitored by PVMBG through the installation of monitoring equipment, as well as 24-hour visual observations," wrote PVMBG in its account, @PVMBG quoted on Sunday ( 5/12/2021).

PVMBG continued, on December 2, the Semeru Volcano Observation Post (PGA) had issued a warning so that people would not move around Besuk Kobokan, Bessuk Kembar, Besuk Bang, and Besuk Full, in anticipation of avalanches/hot clouds falling.

"Mount activity. Semeru is always informed through WAG which consists of elements of the community, local government, BPBD, volunteers, and other relevant agencies, including the lava fall incident on December 1," wrote PVMBG.

Sending a Letter to the Local Government

Meanwhile, Head of the Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) Andiani stated that his party had written to the Regent of Lumajang, Thoriqul Haq and the Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa on December 2, 2021.

"On December 2, we have also issued a letter to the Governor and Mr. Regent of Lumajang regarding the current conditions and the appeal that we conveyed in the letter," said Andiani at a press conference, Sunday (12/5/2021). Andiani also explained that the hot clouds and avalanches on December 1, 2021, had a sliding distance of 1,700 meters from the peak, or 700 meters from the end of the lava flow, with a sliding direction to the southeast.

After the hot cloud avalanche, lava avalanches occurred with the distance and direction of the slide not being observed. Then on December 4, 2021 starting at 13.30 WIB, a flood vibration was recorded.

Furthermore, at 14.50 WIB, hot clouds of avalanches were observed with a sliding distance of 4 km from the peak or 2 kilometers from the tip of the lava flow to the southeast or to Besuk Kobokan.
