Jakarta Chosen as World Literary City by UNESCO

DKI Jakarta is one of 49 other cities in the world that was selected as the City of Literature or World Literature City, which was announced by UNESCO through
its official website, unesco.org on November 8, 2021. Jakarta was the only city in Indonesia that was selected.

Jakarta was selected based on the category of cities that have a long history and have great potential for improvement and development of literature and
literacy.

"We feel very proud of this UNESCO election. As a city, Jakarta must be built sustainably. The infrastructure development that we have done so far is important
to make Jakarta a developed city. However, we also improve the quality of its people," said Anies in a statement. written, Tuesday (9/11/2021).

He explained that Jakarta has a long history of literacy. Namely since the period of the kingdom, colonial, until the early days of Indonesian independence
until now. In addition, Jakarta is also an important center for books and literacy.

"We remember that it was in Jakarta that the first newspaper was established, the first book publisher was established, Balai Pustaka, and the Indonesian
Publisher Association (IKAPI) was also established in Jakarta. In fact, Indonesia's independence began with the knitting of words and sentences composed by the
founders of this nation. in Jakarta and then spread to all corners of the republic," he explained.

The former Minister of Education and Culture hopes that the election of Jakarta as the City of World Literature can continue to be developed in the future.

"With the election as the City of World Literature, we ensure that we will continue to maintain and develop this strong historical root in the future," Anies
explained.

Literacy Community Contribution
The Head of the DKI Jakarta Tourism and Creative Economy Agency (Disparekraf), Andhika Permata stated that Jakarta was built with a spirit of collaboration
that made it develop as it is today.

"In this case, I would like to express my appreciation to the collaborators, namely the creative economy community who brings the city to life, the Jakarta
Arts Council, and the literacy communities who have contributed to advancing literacy in the capital city," said Andhika.
