Some highly creative and entertaining movies. Sure, they're not all Oscar-winning level. But for keeping your brain busy on a random Thursday night? They're perfect.

Back in January, Netflix announced their commitment to bring audiences a new movie every single week of 2021. Many months in, they're delivering on that promise. There's truly something for everyone: mystery, romance, comedy, horror, you name it. Plus all the stars your heart desires, from Leonardo DiCaprio and Zendaya to Eric Andre, Octavia Spencer, and more. So where should you begin? Here are our picks for the best Netflix original movies available now or premiering soon.

The Tomorrow War

Parmi ces recrues civiles, Dan Forester, qui se retrouve affecté à une mission de la plus haute importance : récupérer des données de recherches qui pourraient permettre la mise au point d'une toxine efficace contre les Whitespikes afin de la produire de manière industrielle dans le passé, permettant ainsi à l'humanité de stopper la guerre avant même qu'elle ne commence. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has never asked much of Scarlett Johannson. Since her entry into the franchise in 2010, as the ex-KGB assassin Natasha Romanoff (aka Black Widow), she has essentially played a sidekick to the then all-male Avengers, disarming bad guys in an impractically low-cut, skin-tight catsuit. This is a character who was deemed so insignificant by Marvel’s former CEO that he discontinued Black Widow merchandise from Avengers toy lines in 2014. And why wouldn’t he? Across the film series, Natasha is not afforded the importance she deserves. She is little more than set dressing, the token woman on the team – with minimal agency and screen time – whose storylines are invariably intertwined with those of her male co-stars.

In Captain America: The Winter Soldier, she maintains a lightly flirtatious patter with Cap throughout the movie, then improbably kisses him to evade capture during a chase sequence. For the following year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron, she is passed over to the Hulk as a love interest/calming influence, and the wisecracking Tony Stark distastefully mocks their romance in front of the rest of the crew (he genuinely says to her, “You and [Bruce] Banner better not be playing hide the zucchini” with horrible, smug satisfaction). On the whole, these movies are famously sexless – they are designed as family-friendly entertainment, after all – and yet within these child-appeasing parameters Natasha is constantly objectified. Last month, Johansson spoke out about her “hypersexualisation” in the early days of the MCU, and bemoaned that her character was treated like “a piece of ass”.

In some respects, Natasha’s long-overdue solo feature does deviate from its identikit predecessors. Under Cate Shortland’s direction, and with Johansson serving as executive producer for the first time, the superhero is finally clothed more appropriately in monochrome leather jackets, jeans and long-sleeved tops, and her latest crime-fighting costume is form-fitting without being quite so revealing. Black Widow passes the Bechdel test for female representation – which is more than can be said of Iron Man, The Avengers or Thor: Ragnarok – and for once Natasha is not set up as anyone’s romantic partner (although there is a male companion who heavily implies he wants to be more than just friends with her). These updates are all welcome improvements, however the film is still plagued by many of the same problems as the wider franchise.

Black Widow is a 2021 American computer-animated coming-of-age fantasy film produced by Pixar Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures. The film is directed by Enrico Casarosa (in his feature-length directorial debut), written by Jesse Andrews and Mike Jones, produced by Andrea Warren, and starring the voices of Jacob Tremblay, Jack Dylan Grazer, Emma Berman, Saverio Raimondo, Maya Rudolph, Marco Barricelli, Jim Gaffigan, Peter Sohn, Lorenzo Crisci, Marina Massironi, and Sandy Martin.

Set on the Italian Riviera, the film centers on Black Widow Paguro, a sea monster boy with the ability to assume human form while on land, who explores the town of Portorosso with his new best friend Alberto Scorfano, experiencing a life-changing summer.[2] Black Widow takes inspiration from Casarosa's childhood in Genoa; several Pixar artists were sent to the Italian Riviera gathering research from Italian culture and environment. The sea monsters, a "metaphor for feeling different", were loosely based on old Italian regional myths and folklore.[3][4] Like La Luna, the design and animation were inspired by hand-drawn and stop motion works and Hayao Miyazaki's style. Casarosa described the result as a film that "pays homage to Federico Fellini and other classic Italian filmmakers, with a dash of Miyazaki in the mix too".[5]

Black Widow premiered at the Aquarium of Genoa on June 13, 2021,[6] and was originally set to be theatrically released in the United States on June 18, 2021.[7] However, in response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the film was released direct-to-streaming on Disney+, along with a simultaneous limited run at the El Capitan Theatre; it was released in theaters in countries without the streaming service. The film received generally positive reviews from critics, with praise for its visuals and nostalgic feel.
