This trail begins near the ranger station. It takes about an hour to walk, with most treks finishing at a cliff on which hikers can take in views of neighboring Hakalau Forest Valley. The trail is extremely muddy during certain times of the year Be sure to wear sturdy footwear or boots for this trek. If you're seeking butterflies, this trail provides great opportunities. Also, if you'd like to see birds, they usually sit in the trees and any noise could potentially catch their attention.

The forest roads network allows hunters to get access during game bird seasons. Since you're so in close proximity to the sea, it's easy to add a few hours of beach time in your visit. Simply head to the nearby Nanawale Beach Park on the Puna coast to enjoy a refreshing snorkeling session or surfing along the Pacific with views of Mauna Kea in the distance! The refuge has at least 70 different species of bird, including eight endangered species such as Palila (Loxioides bailleui), Hawaii Creeper (Oreomystis mana) and `I`iwi (Vestiaria coccinea). The birds most frequently seen are the Hawaii Nehe (Loxops ochracea) as well as the Hawaii Amakihi (Hemignathus virens) as well as Nene also known as Hawaiian Goose (Branta sandvicensis).
