Tooth decay or cavities can occur at any time. A combination of factors like poor cleaning habits or poor dental hygiene, bacteria in the mouth, etc, causes them. Cavities are formed when a part of your mouth is permanently damaged, & a hole develops in the enamel. Regular brushing & flossing can help you avoid such problems.

If a cavity is detected early, it can be easily treated by filling it with composite resin materials. However, if left untreated for too long, the infection can reach the pulp & may require a root canal. If you are afraid of losing your teeth & want to maintain good oral hygiene, find out more about your dental options here.

The best things you can do to prevent cavities.

  • Brush with a fluoride paste.

Dentists recommend brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes. Use a fluoride-based toothpaste to strengthen your teeth & avoid the risk of cavities. Your brush should be at an angle of 45 degrees & should come in contact with your teeth as well as gums. This helps to remove any particles, debris, or plaque from your teeth. Avoid using a hard-bristled toothbrush, & do not brush for more than 2 minutes as it can lead to gum recession.

  • Floss daily.

Most people take flossing lightly & avoid doing it. However, it is crucial for your dental health & prevents your teeth from getting cavities. Floss is a thin cord that helps you clean the areas between your teeth where the bristles of a toothbrush can not reach. It eliminates any food particles or plaque formed between your teeth, preventing them from tooth decay & gum disease.

  • Use mouthwash.

Mouthwash plays a significant role in providing you with good oral health by providing additional benefits to brushing & flossing. It contains bacteria-fighting ingredients that wash away leftover food particles, plaque, & germs when you rinse it. It also helps you get rid of bad breath. Swish it around your mouth for 30 seconds, then spit it out. Use a fluoride-based mouthwash as it provides strength to your enamel & prevents tooth decay.

  • Maintain a good oral hygiene.

Follow a strict dieting plan, eat healthy food, & drink an adequate amount of water daily. It is preferred to drink tap water to keep your oral health intact. Do not skip brushing & flossing. Avoid food & beverages that contain high amounts of sugar. The less amount of sugar you consume, the less it will invite bacteria to feed upon you & the less likely you will be to develop cavities.
