The original Silk Road was established during China's Han Dynasty's (206 BCE–220 CE) westward expansion, which established trade networks in what are now Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, and Uzbekistan, as well as modern-day India and Pakistan to the south. These routes reached Europe over a distance of around 4,000 miles.As a result, Central Asia became the core of one of the first waves of globalization, connecting eastern and western markets, generating enormous riches, and mingling cultural and religious traditions. China received valuable Chinese silk, spices, jade, and other things from the west, while receiving gold and other precious metals, ivory, and glass from the east. During the first millennium, the route's popularity soared.
However, trade was hampered by the Crusades and Mongol expansions in Central Asia, and today, Central Asian countries are economically isolated from one another, with intra-regional trade accounting for only 6.2 percent of all cross-border trade. They are also strongly reliant on Russia, particularly for remittances, which account for one-third of Kyrgyzstan's and Tajikistan's GDP.
