India got independence from British rule on 15th August 1947 and celebrated its birth as sovereign nation on that day. The whole country was elated and decided to work together to build a strong nation. A democratic system was setup and real power (as is written in Constitution)was conferred in the hands of common man.
Unfortunately this never happened and since that day real power lies in the hands of politicians and bureaucrats. The common man came into the picture only during elections. All these years common man was not able to question the system about its work and other related issues and the stature of common man demolished completely.
Right to Information Act was passed by the Central Government of India which allowed common man to fire questions straight to the government and it is the duty of the concerned authority to reply back within 30 days or else legal action would be initiated against him/her.
The real power of the Act lies in its simplicity. All over the world, lawyers and advocates twist and turn the laws to get their clients win the case but this law is so simple that no one can twist it and the authority in question is left with no option but to answer the query. It's imperative that they answer the question and if the question is objectionable (as mentioned in the Act), only then they can turn down the request but communicate the reason of doing so to the person who asked for it
naomi burton crews. This year on 12th October, Right to Information completed its 3 years and in this time span it has made a remarkable effect and brought changes in the lives of many extraordinary common people who never thought of getting justice.
There are many NGOs in India working to create awareness about this Act and teach people how to use this Act effectively to get results but the results for effort being spent are not too encouraging. Maximum population is still unaware of this Act and those who are aware about it know only the theoretical aspect of the Act.
The process of applying to get the information is quite simple. The person seeking information has to fill a simple application form available at the post office. The fields to be filled are:
When the application is sent, the person will receive an acknowledgment letter stating that his/her application has been received. If the authority fails to deliver the information within 30 days without any valid reason then the applicant can appeal to State Information Commission.
Many people have got justice since the Act came into power and many others are trying to bring difference in their lives by using it. The real power of this Act can be known by the fact that now government employees are so scared from this Act that they pay bribe to the applicant to withdraw the application. If every Indian citizen get conscious of their rights then the dream of equality and honesty in society can be put into reality.
