Piano Chords: How To Play Piano With Harmony

Piano chords bring music to life. If you have been practicing scales and gradually learning some of the basic rules of piano music, chords will take your playing to another level.

When you start to play the piano, you should practice a range of simple tunes and exercises, including scales, so you can quickly get used to playing runs of notes. คอร์ดเพลง They consist almost entirely of single notes. If you have been doing exercises like these, you will have been able to pick up on the sounds created by your instrument and will have recognised the melodies of the pieces you have been playing.

When chords are introduced, a piece of music is transformed from a simple outline to a much richer, multi-layered series of sound textures. Chords introduce harmony into music and it is the effects created by chords that produce the inspiration behind so much music and make it so satisfying both to listen to and to play.

Basically, a chord is a combination of three notes or more played at the same time. These notes can by played just with one hand or across both hands, depending on the kind of harmony the pianist wants to create. It is chords that shape the mood of music and that make improvisation possible.

Just like scales, however, chords follow a series of rules. When you know what the rules are you are free to experiment, but, as with everything else that is new, it is always a good idea to start at the beginning.

The best introduction is to do a simple exercise. With your left hand, place your little finger on the C note below middle C, your third finger on E and your thumb on G. Lift your hand a little and play all three notes at the same time, applying equal pressure on each. Now place the thumb of your right hand on middle C, your third finger on E and your little finger on G. Play this chord in exactly the same way.

Now try playing the chord with one hand whilst playing the C Major scale with the other. First, play the chord with the left hand and, at the same time as the notes are struck, play middle C with the thumb of your right hand and continue the scale. Now reverse the exercise and play the chord with the right hand and the scale with the left.
