Of the top 25 largest markets for the Oscar Isaac

Marvel Studios' Disney+ original series Moon Knight. Since the two shows have nothing to do with each other, anything Moon Knight has to say about Avatar isn’t automatically a conclusive statement. However, the nature of the statement, and the nature of Moon Knight itself still works to add a sense of legitimacy to it.

Since its conception, there has been heavy debate among fans of Avatar: The Last Airbender about whether or not it’s okay to call it an anime. The show has a lot of overlap with anime thanks to its art style, animation, and its use of Asian cultural themes and aesthetics. The biggest counterpoint to the idea has been that anime is typically viewed as a product of Japan, so Avatar, being made in America, may not count because of that. Not only that, but other acclaimed cartoons with anime-style art such as The Boondocks and Teen Titans aren’t usually grouped with anime, so there’s an idea that it doesn’t make sense for people to pick and choose what does and doesn’t count as anime.

These figures come from Samba TV, which measures 3 million SmartTV households stateside as their sampling, which tuned into the streaming series for at least five minutes.

Turning Red recently became the most watched feature premiere ever on Disney+, clocking 2.5 million U.S. households in its first weekend, per Samba TV, from March 11-13. Disney anecdotally supported this claim, but on a global level.

Moon Knight was watched by 277,000 UK households in its first five days, 88K households in Germany, and 11K in Australia. How that compares to Hawkeye: That series saw 199K UK homes, 63K German homes, and 10K in Australia over its first Wednesday-Sunday. WandaVision premiered on a Friday, while subsequent Marvel live-action series have dropped on Wednesdays.

Of the top 25 largest markets for the Oscar Isaac- and Ethan Hawke-led Moon Knight, Seattle overperformed the most (+39%), followed by Portland, OR (+34%) and Pittsburgh, PA (+32%).

That debate has been going on for years, and oddly enough, Moon Knight episode 1 might have settled it. When Arthur Harrow is telling Steven Grant about how the goddess Ammit was betrayed by her avatar, Steven jokes about James Cameron’s Avatar, and when Arthur tries to correct him, he then asks if he means the anime—which, given the context and general history, could only mean Avatar: The Last Airbender. Not only that, but by specifically calling it an anime, Moon Knight seemingly brings up the old debate to declare that Avatar: The Last Airbender is, in fact, an anime.

Outside of the jukebox Guardians of the Galaxy films, projects from Marvel Studios aren't generally known for their banging soundtracks – but that's one of several ways in which Moon Knight stands out from the crowd.

The character himself is a bold departure from the usual happy-go-lucky underdogs of the MCU, with Steven Grant/Marc Spector suffering from dissociative identity disorder and is also the avatar of the frightening ancient Egyptian god, Khonshu.

Still, the Disney Plus series is by no means devoid of laughs, with star Oscar Isaac putting his comic timing and delivery to good use on numerous occasions, including one chaotic sequence set to one of Wham!'s most popular tunes.
