Apple changed the nature of how we view computers when they introduced the iPad and created a whole new category of electronic devices. Since the iPad was introduced, a host of other companies also introduced devices similar in look to the iPad but with a different operating system (OS).

Many individuals have become even more confused when trying to decide which device to buy whether it is an iPad, or any one of the myriad of Android Tablet devices. Continuous developments in technology have even created more confusion with numerous cell phone handsets that perform computing functions.

But what really is a tablet? A tablet is a computer, a mobile computer to be more precise. The tablet can be operated by touching the screen to select programs that perform various functions. Where the typical tablet differs from the regular computer is that it does not usually come with a physical keyboard. The tablet keyboard is virtual and tablets with keyboard  as an accessory. Some tablets also have a stylus pen or a digital pen that allow the user to interact more efficiently when using some programs.

Today, the difference between a smart-phone and a tablet has narrowed tremendously. However distinctions still exist. Smart-phones tend to have slower processors and smaller screens even though this is changing while the tablet will have more memory and more power to perform computing tasks similar to a regular laptop.

If portability is important then a tablet is the answer. If the device will be used regularly to access email or read e-books, then a tablet is the answer.

Within recent times however, tablets have improved tremendously to the point that they are being given a second look to be used as entertainment and productivity devices. The Kindle Fire HD is well integrated in the services offered by Amazon. Microsoft recently introduced the Surface with its new operating system Windows 10, and along with the Nexus tablet from Google and devices produced by Samsung, Acer and other manufacturers, there are many options to choose from.

A number of reasons exist for choosing to buy a tablet. Numbered among them is it is easy to browse the Internet with a tablet. Tablets also, depending on the manufacturer, have a wide variety of Apps available. These Apps allow users to access e-books, games, movies, printers, documents and many, many more.

Tablets offer a range of advantages. They are portable, they are becoming more powerful and capable, they are being accepted more and more in the market, they can be used as an e-book reader, they can browse the Internet, they can edit documents and images and they can be used to receive and send email messages.
