The Suicide Squad: HBO Max Boss Calls the Second Spinoff a Different Genre From Peacemaker

Although details surrounding it are not yet known, it has been confirmed that the upcoming second HBO Max spinoff from The Suicide Squad may not be in the same genre as its comedic predecessor, Peacemaker.

HBO and HBO Max Chief Content Officer Casey Bloys did not reveal any new information about the upcoming show while speaking to Deadline, merely saying "I don't want to take anything away from [The Suicide Squad writer/director and Peacemaker creator James Gunn]. I think he has been such a terrific partner on the show so I will let him talk about any plans he wants to share." However, during the announcement of the upcoming second spinoff, Gunn spoke more about the project, debunking the belief that the Thinker would star in it, though he gave no clues as what genre the unnamed show will be nor which characters from The Suicide Squad would feature in it.

Peacemaker picks up five months after the events of The Suicide Squad as Christopher Smith is fully recovered from his failed mission and re-enlisted by Amanda Waller to join Project Butterfly. The black ops squad, headed by shady mercenary Clemson Murn and including fresh blood Leota Adebayo and A.R.G.U.S. agents John Economos and Emilia Harcourt, are tasked with tracking down and killing extraterrestrial parasitic beings before they can complete their plans to conquer the Earth. Peacemaker has been a critical hit since premiering on HBO Max in January and thanks to its strong viewership, it looks to only just be getting started.
