Get incorporated and pay yourself a tidy salary, take the rest of your profits as distributions, so you don’t get hammered so badly by self-employment taxes. Dan Kennedy talks a bit about a preponderance of proof when you’re presenting yourself to your potential client. To build some credibility for yourself initially, evidence of sites you’ve ranked and results you’ve obtained will help a great deal when you’re selling SEO.

Many business owners squander thousands of dollars just because they lack the sense of doing what’s best for their business. There are many resources online and amazing books you can read that can provide you with insights on how to start and set up a successful SEO business. However you get your prospects, it’s on you and your sales team to close deals and convert those prospects to clients. General sales best practices, like responding to leads as quickly as possible, will apply here. One of the best long-term sources of clients you’ll have is referrals.

Customer Value– Ideally, you want to choose an industry that makes a lot of money. Companies in high-value industries will pay more for SEO services. Legal, healthcare, and consultation services tend to be high-value. The problem is you need a proven track record to capture these clients, which, if you’re starting, you probably don’t have. But you can still go after lower value industries where there are many volumes to compensate for the scanter contracts.

I generally recommend aiming for an industry you’re at least somewhat familiar with, because it makes it easier and more natural for you to communicate with potential clients. When you speak their language and can bond based on mutual experiences, you have a better chance of closing deals. Once you’re established, of course, you can pay people to pretend to have any experience you want to attract whatever customers you want to find. The scale of your focus will also indicate what level of service you want to provide. It’s easy enough to run a self-service platform and simply provide tutorials and support when you’re targeting small businesses and individual entrepreneurs. For large brands, that generally doesn’t cut it; they want to pay someone to do all the work for them, rather than paying for tools and also paying for employees to do the work.

Everything was reactive and they were just trying to scrape by and do enough to earn their monthly retainer. I come from a client side SEO background and have worked with a couple of large e-Commerce brands as an in-house, go-to guy for on-site SEO work. I oversaw the day-to-day on-site SEO operations of the business. For larger projects and roll-outs, we would contract external SEO agencies for implementation and off-site work. These were significant accounts that were worth in the tens of thousands of dollars. The information is all within the SEOs who share their opinions and findings publicly online.

This makes it easier to hire and scale when you decide to go from a how to scale an agency team of one to a team of many. Inbound practices lay the foundation for your agency’s online presence. Think of it as passively getting eyes on your brand. This involves different strategies to attract leads to your agency – SEO, social media, content marketing, and paid ads. Links are the only reliable way to increase your domain authority and page authority, which will support your rankings in search engines.
