If you’re a stoner visiting Madrid, you might be wondering how and where to buy weed in Madrid (Spain). Luckily for you, there are many places where you can buy cannabis (legally). In this article we explain the best ways to buy and smoke marijuana in the capital of Spain. We also answer some other important questions, such as: Is it legal to smoke indoors in Madrid? And is it legal to smoke on the streets of Madrid? If not, what are the fines?
There is no short and simple answer to the question whether or not cannabis is legal in Spain. It is still (highly) illegal to sell cannabis in Spain. However, cannabis possession for personal use is not illegal in Spain on private property. You are allowed to smoke marijuana in the privacy of your own home, and you are even allowed to grow up to two plants per household in private properties out of the public view.
Smoking cannabis on the streets of Madrid is something that happens quite a lot: if you walk through the city, you will surely encounter the smell of burning cannabis in many places. But although it is fairly common to smoke outside in public in Madrid, the police can fine you and take possession of your herbs.
It is also legal to sell and buy bongs and other cannabis paraphernalia (such as pipes, cannabis seeds, CBD oil) in Spain. These products are easy to find throughout the city of Madrid, and can also be ordered online legally (take a look at our assortment for online orders delivered to your doorstep in Madrid).
There are several ways to buy weed in Madrid, and it may be surprising to you that it is possible to buy weed legally in the city. The most obvious and easy to way get marijuana in Madrid is to visit one of the so-called “smoke shops” or CBD shops, of which there are about a dozen in Madrid. These are fully legal shops that sell legal cannabis openly without any memberships or registration required, although the cannabis that is sold here contains (almost) no THC (less than 0,2%) – making it completely legal.
The overall quality of weed in Madrid is quite good. There are many people growing small amounts of cannabis with the intention of selling it (or at least part of the harvest), and as a result there is a lot of weed available for sale. Thanks to the good climate and the good availability of growing supplies such as high-quality seeds, nutrients and grow lights, most (illegal) dealers sell weed of fairly good to really high quality. Please be aware that the quality can range from very bad to very good, and you’re never really sure what you’re buying from an unknown dealer.
The legal CBD-weed that you can buy in Madrid is usually imported from Italy or Switzerland, where it’s cultivated in advanced growing facilities. Therefore, the quality of these products is usually very good, but because these CBD-varieties lack the psychoactive cannabinoid THC, it won’t get you high.
The prices of cannabis in Madrid vary widely, but are not very high (compared to the Netherlands, for example). Most dealers sell their weed for about €5,- per gram, depending on the quality and quantity you’re buying. If you buy more than just one or two grams, there’s usually some discount involved. These prices are similar on the Canary Islands.
If you’re a tourist, be aware that most dealers will try to sell you their weed at higher prices. It’s always a good idea to bargain and never accept the first price that you’re offered on the streets. Especially if you don’t speak any Spanish, expect to be ripped off, albeit only slightly. If the dealer is asking €10 per gram or even more, be sure to tell him that this is too high and you know the real prices. But be aware that real top-notch weed can cost a little more than the average yerba you will find on the streets, so in some cases €10 per gram may be a good price (but more often than not, you should be able to find good weed at lower prices than this).
In the CBD-weed shops, the prices also range from about €5 to about €15 per gram. If you’re looking to buy CBD-weed in Madrid for medicinal purposes, it may be worth paying prices on the high side to get weed with a higher percentage of CBD. Otherwise, the main thing that you’re looking for is a good flavor, and most low-priced CBD-varieties will taste just as good as the more expensive ones.
We have already said that it’s illegal to sell weed in Spain, but there are dealers selling weed illegally anyway (like in nearly every other country around the world). So where do I find them?
Although we cannot give precise information, your best bet to buy weed from a dealer in Madrid is to ask some locals. Restaurant owners, people working in smoke shops, or just random Spanish people on the street will definitely be able to point you in the right direction. Especially in touristic locations such as parks, there will be people selling cannabis illegally.
The two pictures below show two different varieties of "real" marijuana that we bought from a dealer in Madrid that was recommended to us by a local resident. The quality and flavour were not disappointing, and the price was fairly low at €5 per gram.
There are basically two ways to buy weed legally in Madrid.
Buying weed from a CBD-shop (weed without THC).
Because cannabis without THC is not prohibit by Spanish law (neither by most other European countries), it is legal to buy this product over-the-counter in the stores that sell this throughout the city. It is very easy to find, and the quality and flavor are usually good, although this product won’t get you high like normal weed that does contain THC. CBD is another cannabinoid that can relax you and have some minimal effects, but it won’t get you high like THC.
Buying weed from a cannabis social club.
Social clubs in Spain are sometimes compared to coffeeshops in the Netherlands, where you can (sort of) legally buy and smoke real cannabis that DOES contain the psychoactive ingredient THC. In Barcelona there are over a hundred social clubs, so cannabis in basically available everywhere. But in Madrid (2021), this seems to be a different story. Where are the cannabis social clubs in Madrid? Locals tell us that most, if not all, of the cannabis social clubs in Madrid have been closed down. There’s also stories of police officers waiting outside of the social clubs for people to come out and search them for any weed (that’s illegal to carry on the streets) in order to take away the weed and give a them a fine. There is basically no news to be found about these cannabis social clubs in Madrid from after 2019, so they seem to have disappeared or at least gone very private. To buy weed from a social club in Spain, you must also be introduced by an existing member of the club. So even if you’re able to find a club that’s still open, you need to know a local that can introduce you before you can buy anything or come inside to smoke. This basically eliminates the option of cannabis social clubs for tourist or temporary visitors of the city, and leaves you with only two choices: buying CBD-weed from a legal store, or buying “real” cannabis illegally from a dealer.
In public, it is not legal to carry weed on you in Madrid, or anywhere else in Spain. According to Spanish law, the police is not allowed to search inside your underwear without a warrant, so that may be sort of a legal loophole to safely carry weed in public. In private, however, it should not be any problem at all to have a few grams of weed or hash on you.
If you get caught with small amounts in public, there will usually be nothing more than a fine and the police taking possession of your weed, but it’s still illegal.
If you’re on vacation in Spain and you’ve bought a little more weed than you really needed, it may be tempting to take it back home with you. Please never do this: it is illegal to traffic cannabis from Spain into other countries, and the consequences can be big. Taking cannabis back home with you to another country is a bad idea. It’s just not worth it.
What is the best name for cannabis in Spanish? How do they know what I'm talking about? Well, you could just say weed and make some creative gestures, most people will surely understand you. If you want to sound more like a real Spanish stoner, consider using one of these other names for weed in Spain:
Yerba (Hierba), Ganja, Weed, Marihuana (Mari), Grifa
A joint is called “un porro”, “un leño”, “un bate”, “canuto”.
There are over a dozen “CBD-shops” in Madrid that sell weed over the counter without any prescriptions, restrictions or residency laws. These products are sold as souvenirs and the packaging usually says that it’s not intended to be smoked, but of course that’s exactly what people will do. To find one of these shops selling CBD weed, simply go to Google Maps and enter “CBD”. Most shops will pop up, and there are some more that will pop up if you enter a different search term such as “weed” or “cannabis”. But to make things easy, here’s a list of some cannabis shops in Madrid that we visited, including pictures and a short description of the products that they sell.
Cannabis Store Amsterdam may be the most beautiful chain of CBD shops in Madrid. You can buy many different strains of legal CBD weed in this shop, without registering or being a resident of Spain. All you need to do is say what you want, pay, and that's it!
There are various locations of Cannabis Store Amsterdam around Madrid, as it is a chain with more than 100 franchise stores throughout Europe. We visited two of their shops in Madrid: the café version in the center of the city (near Plaza Callao) where you can enjoy a cup of (cannabis-)coffee on the terrace in this beautiful spot in the city - and the smaller version on Calle Montera without the coffee bar and terrace. Both locations sell CBD flowers, pre-rolled CBD joints, moonrocks, CBD hash, CBD oil (and other legal cannabis oils), CBD edibles (such as cookies, brownies, lollipops and tea). The packaging and overall presentation of the products is very attractive, as are the names of the legal CBD weed varieties (Purple Haze, Ice Rock, Kritical, Gorilla Glue, AK-47, Amnesia, American Dream, to name a few). Paraphernalia such as weed grinders, blunt wraps (weed cigar wraps), rolling papers, ash trays, rolling trays, lighters and pipes are also available.
Be careful: time in the coffee shop https://barcelonacoffeeshops.club/ flies by! You should not expect that you will run for half an hour, and then on a tour and shopping. Even if you tend to be always in a hurry, in a coffee shop in the company of a rich indica, you can suddenly freeze for several hours. Intoxication from marijuana cannot be compared with alcohol.
