Breast Cancer Treatment Options Are Wide Open

The development of the medical world allows breast cancer patients to choose the right, efficient, and appropriate therapy for their needs. The earlier cancer is detected, the more diverse types of therapy patients can choose from. However, therapy must match the stage and nature of the cancer cells.

Oncology surgeon from the Metropolitan Medical Care Hospital (MMC) Jakarta, Farida Briani Sobri, said breast cancer surgery has developed rapidly over the past 30 years. This development allows for breast conservation options.

"The notion that breast cancer sufferers only have one breast is not entirely correct, unless that's what the patient wants," said Farida at an online discussion.
In the past, breast cancer was synonymous with surgery to remove the entire breast or mastectomy. Now, there is a lumpectomy or breast conserving surgery (BCS), which removes part of the breast that has cancer or abnormal tissue.

In addition, patients can also choose oncoplastic surgery, namely breast reconstruction after lumpectomy. The reconstruction is expected to make cancer survivors feel whole and confident. "This can be done if the patient does not immediately perform surgery from the start," said Farida.
According to him, choosing breast cancer therapy will be more accurate if the doctor makes a pathological diagnosis of the patient with a biopsy. Pathological diagnosis is considered more accurate than diagnosis through ultrasonography (USG), positron emission tomography (PET) scan, or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

There are several types of biopsy methods that patients can perform. Fine-needle biopsies were introduced to the public in the 1990s, but are not recommended today due to their low accuracy.
Oncologists around the world recommend a core needle biopsy. When this method is combined with ultrasound guidance, the accuracy of cancer detection can increase to 97-99 percent. The false negative results are also small.
