American, Canadian and Mexican 2026 World Cup host cities set to be announced
Cities that have applied to host matches at the 2026 men's World Cup, the first edition to feature 48 teams and the first to be staged in three countries, will find out on Thursday whether their bids have been successful.
In total, FIFA, world football's governing body, is reportedly expected to announce 16 host cities, with 10 in the United States and three each in Canada and Mexico.
FIFA announced in April that Vancouver, Canada had made a successful late application to be considered a host city, leaving 22 candidates in total.
These are the candidate cities across the three countries that are eagerly awaiting Thursday's decision: Atlanta, Boston, Cincinnati, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York/New Jersey, Orlando, Philadelphia, San Francisco, Seattle, Baltimore/Washington D.C, Guadalajara, Mexico City, Monterrey, Edmonton, Toronto, Vancouver.The announcement will begin at 5 p.m. ET on Thursday.
"During the past months we have had open exchanges with the candidate host cities on a number of different topics," Colin Smith, FIFA's Chief Tournaments & Events Officer, said in a statement last month. "We are very thankful and impressed by how dedicated and innovative they all are.
"The host cities will be absolutely key to ensuring the successful delivery of the competition. We look forward to working with them to deliver what will undoubtedly be the largest FIFA World Cup in history."

It will be the second time the US has hosted the World Cup after the first in 1994, and the third time for Mexico, which also hosted in 1970 and 1984. It will be the first time a men's World Cup match has been held in Canada, though the country did host the Women's World Cup in 2015.
The host cities that are successful in their bids could reap huge financial benefits, according to a 2018 US Soccer study, with more than $5 billion in economic activity created in North America.
The study said that those cities chosen to hold World Cup matches could see an estimated $160-$620 million in economic activity.

The day has finally arrived when fans across the world finally learn what cities and stadiums will host matches in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Soccer's most prestigious international tournament is coming to North America in 2026, with FIFA selecting the multi-national bid of the United States, Canada, and Mexico to host the event in four years' time.
With matches spread across the three nations, venues from each country will be selected from across the continent to host games. Of the 80 matches scheduled to be played, 60 will take place in the United States, 10 will be held in Canada, and 10 will be played in Mexico.
The 2026 World Cup is scheduled to be the first with FIFA's newly expanded format, moving from a 32-team tournament to a 48-team tournament.
In the United States, for English language audiences, FS1 will reveal the venues on a special broadcast live at that time. For Spanish language audiences, the venue reveal will be broadcast live on Universo.
In Canada, the selection will be broadcast on TSN1/5.
Additionally, around the world, the announcement can be watched on FIFA+ which is FIFA's official streaming platform.
How many venues will host matches at the 2026 World Cup?
In the initial bidding process, 41 cities with 43 venues submitted bids to FIFA hoping to host 2026 World Cup matches.
Of the initial pool, cuts were made by the official 2026 World Cup bid committee made up of executives from the United States, Mexico, and Canada bid group.
The final list, which was submitted to FIFA as part of the official 2026 World Cup bid, included 23 venues that are up for selection. These 23 venues, chosen in 2018 and submitted to FIFA, will soon be shortened to a final list of 16 or 17 host cities and venues, with the final decision made by FIFA.
What host cities are up for selection for 2026 World Cup matches?
There are 22 host cities and 23 venues on the shortlist for selection, with FIFA set to announce the final decision of where matches will be played. Of those cities, three will be selected from Mexico, two will be selected from Canada, and the final 11 or 12 will come from the United States.
FIFA has not been clear regarding how many venues will be on the final selection list, with various reports stating either 16 or 17 venues will be chosen.
