Steven Spielberg Directs Film West Side Story

Decades ago, little Steven Spielberg heard the music from the musical that then drugged him: West Side Story.

"I was 10 years old at the time, when I heard the recording for the first time," said the great Hollywood director, in an online chat session attended by journalists from several countries.

Steven Spielberg tells what made him as a child so fascinated by the songs in West Side Story.

"What attracted me at that time? The melody. I don't understand the lyrics, but I understand the melody," he said. He was very moved when he heard the orchestra performing the songs.

Memorized
This song in West Side Story was even the first song he had memorized.

"I memorized it, I think within two hours, and I sang it at dinner that time. My parents haven't even heard the album, but I've heard it before," said the 74-year-old filmmaker with a chuckle.

Celebrations and Funerals
Steven Spielberg said he later realized the special features of the songs in West Side Story.

"On one hand it's a celebration of America and on the other it's a funeral, a memorial service. The music shifts from joy, to extreme sadness and tragedy," he explains.
