India's superstar cricketers were pummelled on a second-straight Sunday as a disciplined New Zealand firmly pushed them towards the exit door with an easy eight-wicket victory in the ICC T20 World Cup.
The defeat that puts India in serious danger of losing out on a semi-final berth also raises questions about outgoing T20 skipper Virat Kohli's abject failure to win an ICC tournament in four attempts as captain.
It was their second straight defeat after being handed a 10-wicket thrashing by arch-rivals Pakistan in their tournament opener to Pakistan at the same venue.
Social media was flooded with memes after disappointed fans resorted to humour to vent out their frustration.
There were also Pakistani cricketers who engaged in healthy banter instead of making hateful remarks.
Both Mohammed Amir and Shoaib Akhtar trolled Harbhajan Singh after the match
Many prominent Indians were not amused by these remarks and reacted strongly.
Not to be left behind, top Pakistani journalist Mubasher Lucman made an outlandish allegation against Indian captain Virat Kohli. He said that Kohli deliberately asked Mohammed Shami to bowl the last over of Pakistani’s inning so that Indian media and fans can lay the blame of their loss on a Muslim cricketer.
When ‘elected’ politicians, who are supposed to lead by example, make such bizarre claims, how can other Pakistani elites remain behind.
Pakistani fast bowling legend Waqar Younis said watching a Muslim (Mohammad Rizwan) read namaz in front of Hindus (Indian cricketers and fans) was more satisfying for him than his batting and winning the match.
