Meta Adds Personal Restrictions to VR Avatars to Avoid Harassment in Metaverse

Meta adds a 'personal limit' system to the Horizon Worlds virtual reality experience. This addition is meant to stop harassment in the metaverse.

This new feature is enabled by default on the Horizon Worlds creation platform and the Horizon Venue live event service.

Quoting The Verge, Saturday (5/2/2022), with this personal limitation, Meta adds an invisible virtual barrier around the avatar. The goal is to prevent other people from getting close to the user's avatar.

The system builds on an existing feature, and is claimed to make the user's hand disappear when they get too close to another avatar.

Described by Meta, the built-in feature gives everyone two feet of space. With the addition of personal restrictions, the total personal space distance between one avatar and another is equal to 4 feet.

Meta spokeswoman Kristina Milian confirmed, "Users cannot disable their personal boundaries, as this system is meant to set standard norms on how people interact with each other in VR."

But according to him, changes in the future could make people adjust the radius size.

There Was Sexual Harassment at Metaverse Horizon Worlds
According to Milian, if any other avatar tried to walk or move in someone's personal space, their movement would stop.

Milian also noted that users can still bypass other avatars, so users can't do things like use their bubbles to block entrances or trap people in virtual spaces.
