Donald Trump's Social Media Truth Social Dominates the App Store
Donald Trump's social media, Truth Social, has just launched on the App Store. This marks Trump's return to cyberspace after he was banned by a number of social media platforms last year.
Truth Social is on the list of the top free apps on the App Store. This app is automatically downloaded to the Apple device of users who have pre-ordered. This is as reported by CNBC, Tuesday (22/2/2022).
Many users reported having difficulty registering (registering) an account or being added to a waiting list with the message: "Due to overwhelming demand, we have placed you on our waiting list."
Reuters previously reported that Truth Social was made available to users invited to use it during the testing phase.
Led by former Republican Representative Devin Nunes, Trump Media & Technology Group, the venture behind Truth Social is a technology company positioning itself as a pioneer of free speech.
They hope to attract users who feel their ideas are being pressured by many of the major social media platforms.
The Truth Social page on the App Store shows the first public version of the app (version 1.0) available on Sunday (20/2/2022). According to the page version 1.0.1 currently includes a 'bug fix'.
Previously, Donald Trump's first child, Donald Trump Jr., shared a screenshot of his father's first post on the Truth Social platform.
He posted his father's first upload that read "Get Ready! Your favorite President will see you soon!" took to Twitter with the caption, "Time for some Truth!!"
From the screenshots uploaded, it is clear that Truth Social looks very much like Twitter. There are also options, such as like, quote, and retweet the post.
The difference from Twitter, the tweet option is changed to Truth. The screenshot also shows him joining Truth Social on February 10, 2022, and has 175 followers.
Prior to its release, Truth Social had drawn some controversy. For example, this application was created using the Mastodon source code.
But last October, Mastodon published a statement calling Truth Social infringing on Mastodon's software license.
The reason is that Truth Social claims that Mastodon is proprietary and because Truth Social does not share the source code again.
Mastodon also said that they had sent an official letter to the chief legal officer of Truth Social. This letter requested that the source code be shared and Truth Social added an "open source" section to its website.
