There can be something unsettling about garbology, besides the spectre of espionage, though. And it's that it draws attention to the sheer volume of waste that's out there waiting to be dug up or simply picked over and analysed. Anthropologist Eriksen argues that the gargantuan piles of waste that now litter the planet are symptoms of what he calls "overheated modernity".
