The World's First Global Plastic Pollution Treaty Roadmap

The United Nations (UN) approved the world's first global plastic pollution treaty on Wednesday, March 2, 2022. This is the most significant form of environmental agreement since the 2015 Paris Climate Agreement.

Reporting from AsiaOne, Friday (4/3/2022), member countries held negotiations for more than a week in Nairobi to agree on outlines to control soaring plastic pollution globally.

They underscore the widespread environmental crisis, from the oceans to the tops of mountains.

"We made history today and you should all be proud. Plastic pollution has grown into an epidemic. With today's resolution, we are officially on the path to a cure," said Espen Barth Eide, President of the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA).

Government officials adopt a resolution to create a plastic pollution treaty. The deal is legally binding and will be finalized in 2024. The points of the agreement will have a ripple effect on businesses and economies around the world.

The reason is, any agreement that limits the production, use, or design of plastics will affect oil and chemical companies.

This has also had an impact on the economies of major plastic producing countries, including the United States, China, India, Saudi Arabia and Japan.

Franz Perrez, the Swiss ambassador, said disagreements remained about what to include in the final pact.

"It's a divide between those who are ambitious, and want to find a solution, and those who don't want to find a solution for whatever reason," he said.

Meanwhile public support is pouring in for the idea of ​​a UN treaty on plastic pollution. According to the Ipsos poll released this month, delegates quickly celebrated what they had accomplished in Nairobi.

"This is just the end of the beginning. We have a lot of work ahead of us. But, it is the end of the scourge of plastic waste for the planet," said the head of the US delegation, Monica Medina, in tears.

Juliet Kabera, lead negotiator for Rwanda, hailed the resolution as a "major victory in the global effort to reverse the rapidly deteriorating impact of plastic waste."
