Demand for COVID-19 Tests in the US Drops

American health experts name 2 reasons US citizens' demand for COVID-19 tests declines in early 2022 as the omicron spike increases

Coming out of the Omicron wave, the demand for COVID-19 tests has slowed in the United States (US). By mid-January 2022, when the daily number of cases was at its peak, around 2.5 million tests were processed every day.

about 670,000 COVID-19 tests are performed daily, according to US Department of Health and Human Services data.

Federal data tracks results sent to more than a thousand labs and test sites across the country.

However, the figures do not capture the bulk of home self-testing which is growing in popularity as a supply of test kits becomes more available.

But, demand seems to be dropping there too. One major retailer, CVS, has noted a decline in demand for self-tests since the peak of Omicron, according to a company spokesperson.

The reasons for this decline are twofold, according to Mara Aspinall, a professor of biomedical diagnostic practice at Arizona State University. First, COVID-19 cases are declining, and on the other hand, demand is fading.

US COVID-19 cases have reportedly fallen more than 90 percent since the peak of the pandemic. However, cases in the country are just starting to drop to pre-Omicron case levels.

That's why Aspinall and other experts warn it's important to take advantage of this opportunity to ensure the country is safe, and better prepared for a surge.

"If you look at past epidemics and pandemics, the best-performing countries and communities are the most flexible and able to respond to the demand," Aspinall said.

"Part of the challenge of the ongoing pandemic is the difficulty of scaling up testing when a spike (of COVID-19 cases) starts to occur," said Dr. Thomas Tsai.

assistant professor at Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health. "Unfortunately, time and again, the testing effort at that time was too little, too late."

Even as tests seem more accessible now, just two months ago the Omicron variant had Americans in long lines at testing grounds.

Of the 22 million home COVID-19 tests sold at CVS, 70 percent were sold in the past three months, according to a company spokesperson.

Throughout the pandemic, there have been warning signs that the supply of testing will tighten. During last year's Delta wave, testing rose rapidly starting in July and persisted for months.
