You can easily tell when to sharpen your chainsaw chain from numerous different signs given off by the chainsaw once put into action. It is important to take note of these signs and actually take action and sharpen the blade otherwise it could lead to a fatal injury to either yourself or those around you, especially if you're a beginner at using a chainsaw and don't know how to handle one properly.

When your chainsaw chain is sharp and in fine working order you'll notice that the cuts of whatever it may be cutting produce wood chip chunks quite large and usually in the shape of a square. When the chain is dull however or if it has suffered abrasive damage you'll notice that the chainsaw produces sawdust rather than wood chips.

Another way to tell when to sharpen your chainsaw chain is if it begins to pull to one side. When making a cut on a felled tree for example your chainsaw should go straight through it in a straight line. This is because the chainsaw chain is self feeding. When i say self feeding what i mean is the blades on the chain curve in a hook like shape making it able to dig into the wood. With the chain spinning these hook like blades round at speed it will claw its way through whatever it may be cutting. However when using a dull chain obviously not being as sharp as it should the chain isn't able to grip and claw its way through the wood very easily and if you let it, it will simply run off either left or right.

Using a dull chainsaw can be extremely fatal and when to sharpen your chainsaw chain. By having it pull to one side like mentioned above your not fully in control of the chainsaw and could easily cause you or somebody else a very unpleasant accident. Also in general you'll find that using a dull chainsaw will fatigue you far quicker than when using a sharp chain. This is because you are having to use more force to make the cut that you want as the cutting power would have lost its effectiveness. And by using excessive force to make a cut with your chainsaw you are more likely to experience a kickback which is when the chain gets pinched and causes the whole bar (with the chain still spinning) to be thrust backwards/ upwards and towards the user which can also be fatal.

These are the main signs to look out for when asking yourself when to sharpen your chainsaw chain. Although when in doubt you could just go right ahead and sharpen it anyway. If paying the proper attention to what you're doing and your surroundings there's no reason why you should suffer a hazardous accident.
