Step-by-step guide to retouching photos in Photoshop

Retouching photos can be time-consuming and tedious, especially if you have to do it all on your own. The good news is, there are many tools and techniques in Photoshop that make the process simple, even fun! Follow these simple steps to learn how to retouch photos in Photoshop like a pro.

What Is Retouching?

Retouching is a term used for improving or altering photographs using editing software such as Adobe Photoshop. Most often, people use these programs to remove unwanted items or enhance features in an image, such as by removing wrinkles or smoothing skin. People also might use photoshop to add items that weren’t present originally, like placing someone’s head on another person’s body.

History of Retouching

The first widely known instance of photo manipulation dates back to 1922, when Francis Picabia used photomontage skills he learned from his father – a newspaper illustrator – to place a bottle of his urine next to an art piece. This is also believed to be one of the first instances of copyright issues regarding manipulated photographs.

Skill Requirements for Great Retouchers

Photographers are often asked to touch up their own photos or those of other photographers, but anyone can learn how. For anyone who’s interested in going beyond simply clicking auto fix, these are some of the skills you’ll need.

Equipment Needed by Retouchers

Almost every pro retoucher has some variation of these basic tools. They’re super inexpensive, and you don’t have to break your bank account to get them: a Wacom tablet and pen (not a mouse), an iMac or PC with decent memory, etc. If you want more specific details on what kind of gear you should use, check out Step Eight (Resources for Retouchers).

Basic Tools Every Retoucher Should Know

The first thing you’ll need before you begin any photo editing is a good image editor. There are many out there, both free and paid, but our favourite (and the one we’ll use for these tutorials) is Adobe Photoshop CC (2015). Not only does it have all of your basic tools and features, but it also comes with some amazing photography-specific ones as well.

Layer Masks – The Heart and Soul of Photographic Retouching

Layer masks are one of Photoshop’s greatest features. But, unfortunately, they’re also a source of great confusion for many new users. Today, I’ll go over how layer masks work and how you can use them to get rid of distractions or keep areas looking realistic in your photographs.

Cloning – Learning to See Details Before Making Adjustments

The best way to fix blemishes and other unwanted details is by using a clone stamp tool. It works like magic! The technique relies on sampling areas of an image and applying them elsewhere. In short, you simply grab any part of your photo that you want to copy, and then copy it onto another area of your photo, leaving only your desired changes behind. Watch out for repeating patterns that can be easily detected! Here’s how it’s done

Refining With The Pen Tool

When you’re working with a photo, it’s useful to know how to use Photoshop’s pen tool. You can use it for selections and for refining your editing and cleanup. Let’s take a look at an example of how each of these are done.

Custom Brushes For Color Correction And More In Photoshop CC

When you’re editing photos, sometimes you don’t want your brushstrokes showing up on a certain area. You can always create new brushes, but there’s another way: Simply make an adjustment layer that affects just a portion of your image—in our case, we used a black to white radial gradient set to screen mode at 50% opacity—and then paint with any brush of your choosing!
