Secret Service Training - What To Expect b

In 1865, the United States Secret Service was formed as a branch of the Treasury Department. This makes it one of our nation's oldest federal law enforcement agencies. The Secret Service is responsible for protecting the president and vice president, as well as investigating financial crimes against our country. In order to become employed in the agency, one must go through rigorous training. In this article, we will talk about basic agency training flows what a new agent can expect. Training to be a Secret Service agent is extremely challenging, and requires mental, as well as physical stamina.

Training for new agents is held in Glynco, Georgia at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center. This training lasts for 10 weeks and will provide training to federal investigators in many areas including criminal law and investigation techniques and procedures. When a trainee completes this initial training, he must attend a 17 week course at the Training Academy in Washington, D.C. This is a very detailed course that focuses specifically on the policies of the Secret Service, as well as the procedures involved with investigations and protection.

Specific training involves physical protection skills, emergency medicine, marksmanship, and rigorous physical fitness. This training is very grueling, and only someone in elite physical condition will be able to advance. An agent must be able to stay composed during the mental aspects of this training as well.

As an agent continues with their career, they will continue to receive advanced training including firearms and emergency medicine courses. Many agents will also have to participate in different types of crisis training, that will be utilized during protective assignments. These exercises can provide vital feedback about the agents ability to respond to various emergencies. This is extremely valuable information, because if an agent is lacking in a certain area, steps can be taken to correct the situation. This can often times mean the difference between life and death in a real situation.

There are also several opportunities for Secret Service agents to get additional advanced training in criminal investigations. This is voluntary, but agents are encouraged to attend this training which is normally held by local law enforcement.

In conclusion, Secret Service training is designed to prepare the agent for "real world" emergency scenarios. By completing all the required training, a Secret Service agent will be well prepared for any situation that may arise.
