Piano Lessons

If you aren’t sure what instrument to start with, piano lessons can be an excellent option. They’re a great way to improve fine motor skills and hone hand-eye coordination. Plus, they can be an exciting introduction to music and a fun way to get your child involved in something creative.

Choosing a qualified instructor is key, and rates can vary. For example, a classically trained pianist is likely to charge more than someone who plays in a local rock band. So, if you’re on a budget, ask around and compare prices to find the best deal.

Lesson duration is another factor in cost. Young children can be taught in 30-minute sessions, while older students might need a longer lesson to ensure that they have enough time to work on technique and theory.

Many cities, neighborhoods, and community centers offer music lessons at a lower cost than private music schools. Check with your Parks and Recreation Department, local libraries, and senior centers to see what options are available to you. You can also ask for a discount if your student is taking more than one instrument. If you are able to, approach local musicians and ask them about offering lessons, even if it isn’t their normal gig.

If you don’t have a piano or keyboard at home, consider renting or purchasing a practice space for lessons. Many music teachers have their own practice rooms for use during the week, but if your instructor doesn’t, you can ask for permission to rent a local rehearsal space or community center for a discounted rate. This can be especially beneficial for families that need to stick to a tight schedule and/or travel frequently. In addition, some schools have a piano on-site that can be used for off-hours lessons. This could be a good option for families that need to be flexible with their lesson times due to travel or illness.
