Multitasking is a skill. If you can use your ability to multitask consciously then you're going to be productive. If you let multitasking use you, then not only will you be unproductive, you're going to be overwhelmed, anxious, and constantly busy.

Most productivity gurus will tell you that multitasking is bad. It'll make you stupid they say. It's worse than smoking drugs they say. And although these points may be true, if you can use multitasking productively then you can make it an asset and not a hindrance. Multitasking

Schedule Your Multitasking

If you want to multitask then you are going to need two things. You need to know when it's effective, and you need to know when to use it. Here are some example of when multitasking may be effective for you:

- Listening to audiobooks when you are doing arbitrary activities such as cleaning up or doing your laundry.

- Instead of driving to work you could take the train. This can free you up to do some work.

- Talk while you walk. If you like to walk, or if it's something that you wish to add to your life on a daily basis, then you can schedule any phone calls that you need to make into certain chunks of time. Instead of sitting down you could walk around while you make these phone calls.

- Renewal. If multitasking is a form of renewal for you then it's a great activity. For example, if you like to relax by surfing the web, checking emails, and talking on skype all at once, then that's fine as long as it does the job that it's supposed to - relax you.

- Watch educational videos while you exercise. This can be especially beneficial if you have trouble exercising. Watching something educational will give you extra benefits of doing whatever it is that you want to do.

- Listening to audiobooks in your car. If you drive a lot then you can use that time to enhance your knowledge.

Of course, there are endless ways that you can multitask. These are just some examples. The important thing is that you know when it is effective to multitask, and then the next important thing is that you schedule when you are going to do it.

If you are left without a schedule then you will automatically multitask. Because we now live in a world that is full of stimulation, multitasking has become the default behavior. This is what the productivity gurus mean when they say multitasking can make you stupid. If you fall into unconscious multitasking then you are very unlikely to be doing anything productive.

Figure out what tasks you can effectively multitask and then schedule those into your day. This is productive multitasking. Multitasking is a skill, but if you are using it unconsciously and reflexively then you're probably wasting a whole lot of time and energy.
