Coffee vs Energy Drinks: The Battle to Keep You Awake

You have probably felt the high levels of caffeine in coffee's power-boosting properties. It's not uncommon to grab a cup of coffee before going to bed. Although both can provide you with caffeine, black coffee is known to have more sugars than energy drinks.

For those who aren't sure, here are our top reasons for choosing coffee.

Caffeine is roughly the same amount

If you're concerned that your coffee won't give the same kick as the canned variety, don't be. Energy drinks have between 80 and 200mg of caffeine while 8oz of coffee has 110 to 150mg. Unless you're downing that super-sized Red Bull, you'll probably get the same amount of caffeine in a cup of joe.

Coffee tastes better

Let's be honest there's no energy drink that doesn't taste like a weird fruit punch. This is why they come with names like "Unleaded" and " Assault": you're basically declaring war on your taste buds when you begin chugging this stuff.

Coffee is Healthier

Alongside the caffeine, these drinks typically have lots of sugar. Once the rush is over, you'll crash a few more. You can get an extra boost of energy from coffee but it won't add to the calories you consume daily.

Although they're advertised as "sugar-free," energy drinks have artificial sweeteners that are better left out of your diet in general. It's possible to have the sweetness of your coffee without sugar. This is a significant blow to energy drinks in the coffee vs. energy drinks argument - round 1 and energy drinks are on the ropes!

The Benefits of Drinking Coffee

While we've already said that coffee is healthier than tea, let me clarify. This is a totally different angle. What we're trying to say here, is that, besides the health hazard that energy drinks put on the body, there is an overall positive effect we get by drinking coffee.

Many people drink coffee solely for its pleasant flavor. Others choose it for its natural boost.

Coffee also has several other benefits, including:

  • It helps you remain focused and alert
  • Helps fight depression
  • Helps you burn fat
  • Your physical performance will be improved

Caffeine is the major ingredient in coffee's ability to boost energy levels. After drinking coffee, this stimulant is absorbed into the bloodstream. Then it travels to the brain. The brain is where caffeine blocks the neurotransmitter inhibitory adenosine. This leads to an increase in other neurotransmitters, such as dopamine and norepinephrine. This causes an increase in the firing of neurons.

Studies on humans have shown that coffee improves different aspects of brain functioning including mood, memory and reaction time.

While the general assumption is that caffeine is responsible for the many amazing benefits, the truth is that it is not the case. The benefits of coffee are due to the huge amount of antioxidants in coffee. Energy drinks are not equipped to provide antioxidants, making them very expensive.
