With the rapid rise of the internet and fall of the age of newspapers, local classified ads are taking on a new shape and form. Where newspapers were once the primary source of information for events, ads, and news for a community, modern times have seen online newspapers becoming more popular than their print cousins.

The growth of easy access to computers means that a person no longer needs to actually have a newspaper as all of the information is right at their fingertips and updated more quickly than the print versions. While the newspaper classified ads may be falling out of fashion, the online classified ads are only just getting adult meetings.

In general, online local classified ads are split into the same sections that can be found in a print newspaper: announcements, services, jobs, real estate, automotive goods, and various items for sale. However, this is where the similarity ends. Taking the various items category as an example, more information than ever can now be transmitted from the seller to the buyer. In addition to a more detailed description because there is no limit to the number of words in an advertisement, sellers also have the option of uploading a picture of the item being sold. It is a proven fact that ads with pictures have a better response and result in better sales.

Another feature of online local classified ads is the ease of navigation. Most classified ad sites feature a search function where the only thing a person needs to do is enter the item that is desired. This is quite different from print classified ads as a person must pore over the newspaper, hoping to find the right item and hoping that it is listed in the right category.

A person can also easily switch from searching for new cars to looking for a job with a simple click of the mouse instead of having to look through several pages to find the relevant section.

For a person wishing to browse local classified ads, there are two main options: either using a local newspaper's website or using a national website that has listings for many cities. There are advantages to both. For the buyer, choosing the website from a local newspaper may be better for finding discounted prices as there is less competition for buying products.
