Aircraft Washing Service Equipment - Nose Gear Towing Tools

When I was a young man, 15 years old, I damaged a customer's  Pressure Washing Services  . It was an older Cessna 210, and it was parked in a small Port-A-Port "T-Hangar" and as I put the aircraft back in after washing it, it got away from me because the back of the hangar was slightly sloped. The elevator was slightly bent although not damaged but the plastic end cap was cracked and broken.

"Oh my god," I thought to myself, "this is terrible." Yes, it was, but it was my fault, and now my responsibility. There went a week's worth of profit - ouch. But alas, it could have been worse.

It's interesting how such things in life teach us to pay attention, not rush things and do things right the first time, aka; "measure twice, cut once" or "Safety First". Today, there are tools to prevent this, in fact, I just learned about one the other day. Let's talk shall we?

You see, there was a great YouTube Video titled; "AC Air Technology Wireless Aircraft Tug," posted to the AvWeb Channel on Oct 12, 2013 which stated;

Chan was putting the tug through its paces on the exhibit floor in Fort Worth this week and drawing plenty of interest. Unlike most tugs, which use rubber-tired wheels for traction, the AC Air Technology tug has a miniature tank tread system driven by a pair of powerful electric motors powered by a lithium-ion battery capable of multiple tows."

The unit only weighs 48 pounds and it can tow a 5,000 aircraft, and they have another version that can tow a 15,000 pound aircraft. Just what someone needs when washing aircraft, especially when you try to maneuver an aircraft at the wash rack, or turn it around or carefully put it back into a hangar. Having such control, is a time saver, and in the case study above, when I was 15-years old, a credibility saver and a big money saver.

• If you run an aircraft washing service you might want to think about this solution or something similar. It surely doesn't have to be as sophisticated as this particular product, but you will need something to protect yourself from costly mistakes. There is no reason to have to learn the hard way, when others have come before you and come up with such excellent solutions. Please consider all this and think on it.
