A Course in Miracles is a spiritual teaching that is based on changing our beliefs and perceptions. It offers a way to wake up from the dream of separation and experience oneness.

The Course has three parts: a 669-page Text,  a course in miracles with a lesson for each day of the year; a 488-page Workbook for Students; and a 92-page Manual for Teachers that provides questions and answers to help understand the lessons.
The Text

Presented as a three-volume set, A Course in Miracles is designed to teach its students to unlearn the beliefs that keep them from living happy and fulfilling lives. The Course's curriculum is carefully conceived at both the theoretical and practical levels. Its teaching emphasizes experience over theory, and it specifically states that "a universal theology is impossible but a universal experience is not only possible but necessary."

The Course consists of a 669-page Text, which describes the theoretical foundation upon which its thought system is based; a 488-page Workbook for Students, containing 365 daily lessons that are designed to train the student's mind along the lines established in the Text; and a 92-page Manual for Teachers, which presents a series of questions and answers about some of the most common subjects that arise in the practice of the course. The Workbook and the Text are taught in a step-by-step fashion, with each lesson building on the previous one.

ACIM's language is extraordinarily rich and profound, with many sections written in blank verse. Its thought system is intellectually sophisticated, combining spiritual inspiration with deep psychological understanding of such phenomena as belief and defense systems, perception and identity. It also provides a unique perspective on the nature of the world, in which the real world is truth, and the dreamworld is error.

The Course does not seek to change the world, but only your perception of it. The Course teaches that the world is not what it seems to be, but is the reflection of God's love for His creation. It teaches that sin is a misperception of love, not guilt and punishment. It teaches that the real world is one of unity, love, and sinlessness, and that the true self is perfect and eternal. It teaches that the only way to find happiness is by remembering this truth and returning to God's love.
The Workbook

The workbook of A Course in Miracles is a companion to the Text and contains 365 lessons intended to train the mind to a different perception. The exercises are designed to undo the beliefs and perceptions that limit your experience of reality, and replace them with a recognition of the truth of what is really going on in your life and the world. Each lesson in the Workbook has a central idea that is presented first, and then specific procedures to be followed by you for practicing this idea. The overall goal is to help you generalize the ideas that you are practicing to include all people and things in your life.

As the title suggests, this is a workbook that requires a commitment to practice its lessons daily. The goal is to do one set of exercises a day for the entire year. While this is a challenge, it is also possible to take longer to complete the training period. Some students have taken more than a year to complete the lessons, and it is fine to do so.

It is important to remember that ACIM is not a religion, though it does use Christian terminology. Its teaching is based on universal spiritual themes that transcend any specific religion. It is a path to freedom from the ego mind and a return to love. In fact, the Course says that it is not a way of worshiping Christ or any specific god; it is a way to recognize the love that is already present in your life.

If you are a beginner to the Course, I recommend that you begin by listening to my one-year audio program called ACIM 365. This program provides a 10-minute daily talk on each of the 365 workbook lessons.

Another great resource is the 365 Miracles Daily Journal, which includes the first sentence of each lesson and provides powerful writing prompts for you to express your experience of each lesson. This journal is available on our website. You can also subscribe to our podcast, which has a one-hour class on each of the 365 Lessons every weekday. The classes are offered by Kenneth Wapnick, and are conducted over the phone or via streaming video.
The Manual for Teachers

The purpose of the Manual is to help in the teacher/pupil relationship. It provides answers to questions that are likely to arise. It is not meant to replace the Text and Workbook, but only as a supplement. It teaches that the role of the teacher is to lead the pupil to the experience of God. The teacher is to guide the pupil through a course of forgiveness and healing of the ego thought system. This includes teaching them how to practice ACIM and its principles.

It also covers the relationships with the Bible, as it is often referred to in the Course. It explains the difference between the Bible and the Course, recognizing the differences while honoring their similarities. It is an important book for any serious student of the Course.

Some students wonder about the meaning of miracles in A Course in Miracles. The Course tells us that a miracle is not something that happens out in the world, but it is a change of perception and belief from the ego’s story about reality to the truth. This is how the miracle of salvation is accomplished – through changing our mind and beliefs.

Despite the fact that the Course uses Christian terminology, it is not a religion. It is a spiritual teaching and path that encourages the development of an inner experience of God, not a mystical experience of Jesus. The Course has no formal establishment to govern it, no hierarchy and no priests or pope.

Many people buy the course but are overwhelmed by the number of pages. One suggestion is to buy the audio version of the book, which can be done at your own pace. Another option is to join a class that teaches the book. This group meets every Saturday morning and goes through the lessons of A Course in Miracles, completing one lesson per week over a year. This is a very interactive way to study the material, and it allows you to discuss how the ideas are impacting your life. It is a great way to meet other people who are interested in the Course and how it can be used in your daily life.
The Community

The course consists of three major volumes: the Text, the Workbook and the Manual for Teachers. The Text is a 669-page book with 31 chapters, the Workbook has 365 daily lessons and the Manual for Teachers contains questions and answers on Course concepts. Various ACIM classes are available and offer a variety of approaches to understanding the Course. Some focus on the curriculum and theory of the Course, while others approach it in a more practical way. One class is led by Jennifer Feiereisel, who teaches the Course using a topical approach rather than following the linear structure of the Text and Workbook lessons. She combines passages and clues from all three parts of the course into an integrated curriculum that allows the student to fully understand the Course teachings.

Another popular approach is to take the Course in a study group. While this is not a requirement, it can be very helpful to have the support of fellow students as you work through the material. Many cities host ACIM study groups, which you can find on social media sites or through an online search. Many of these groups are run by volunteers who share the love of the Course with their community.

The workbook portion of the course consists of 365 daily lessons, each accompanied by a description of the lesson and a practice to help you apply it in your life. Each of these lessons builds upon the last, helping you to move from the ego’s view of reality to the truth about yourself and your world. These lessons also provide valuable tools for healing relationships and finding peace.

A Course in Miracles is a non-denominational spiritual path. Its millions of worldwide students come from all different religions and faiths, as well as from those with no religious affiliation at all. Unlike most spiritual teachings, A Course in Miracles does not claim to be 100% unique or unprecedented. Instead, it offers a new interpretation of ancient truths, offering them in a very fresh and accessible way.

While the Course is a profound and transformational path, it is not for everyone. Some people feel unable to relate to its message, particularly because of the overlap with many other religious beliefs and doctrines. These include Christianity, Christian Science, Hinduism, Buddhism and other forms of spirituality.
