Color saturation really only uses if the eye straight sees an item at the highest resolution. For example, a LCD video screen will permit the grays in the image to "swim" on the screen (with respect to the spacing in between surrounding "sound" in an image), however not if the LCD is positioned too close to the eyes for too long.
