Nutrition Selection Guide for Cancer Fighters

Adequate nutritional intake is very important to support the condition of cancer fighters. Medical Nutritionist PT. Kalbe Farma Tbk dr. Dedyanto Henky Saputra, M.Gizi revealed that the guide to selecting nutrition for cancer fighters is divided into three, namely the amount, type, and schedule.

"For that amount, if I refer to the nutritional guide recommendations for cancer fighters, the energy for cancer fighters is around 30--35 Kcal/kgBB," said dr. Dedy in a virtual talk "World Cancer Day 2022 Commemoration, The Importance of Emotional and Mental Support for Cancer Fighters" on Sunday, February 20, 2022.

dr. Dedy explained that the calorie intake of cancer fighters is higher than in healthy people, which is usually 25-30 Kcal/kgBB. Then, the amount of protein is around 1.2--2 g/kgBB depending on the patient's condition.

"The thinner the patient or the higher the risk of malnutrition, usually the greater the protein intake," he added.

Continuing on the type, dr. Dedy said cancer fighters must choose foods that have high energy and protein weight. In addition, choose a dish that cancer fighters like.

"Choose the type of food that the patient likes, of course, so they want to eat. Then, if you can, serve fresh types of food," he explained.

Said dr. Dedy, a cancer fighter is advised to avoid foods that have empty calories, such as sparkling water. "Or drinking too much water before eating," he continued.

The third point is the schedule. dr. Dedy conveyed the frequency of eating often, but the portions must be small.

"The goal is that the patient is not too bloated or full so he misses the next meal," said dr. Dedy.

dr. Dedy also explained to ensure that the eating schedule is not rigid. "If the patient wants to eat again, just eat it," he said.

"There is a desire to eat immediately, do not delay to increase the entry of calories and protein into the patient's body," added dr. Dedy.

dr. Dedy also explained that the problem of malnutrition can be an obstacle when patients undergo cancer therapy. "One of the keys to successful therapy is that the patient has good nutritional readiness because when malnutrition occurs, therapy is often hampered," he said.
