Elon Musk Refuses to Block Russian Media on Starlink Internet Service

The world's richest man Elon Musk said he would not block Russian media on the Starlink satellite service.

This statement was made by the CEO of SpaceX through his official Twitter account on Saturday last week, as quoted on Monday (7/3/2022).

"Starlink was asked by some governments (not Ukraine) to block Russian media sources," the man who is also Tesla boss tweeted on his @elonmusk account.

"We wouldn't do it unless we were at gunpoint. Sorry for being absolute free speechers," Elon Musk added in his Tweet.

Quoting from Space, the request to Starlink came after Russia resumed their military operations in Ukraine, which prompted many countries to impose economic sanctions on the country.

Quoting Engadget, 27 February, the European Union said it would ban the Russian government-backed media, because it was seen as playing a role in spreading misinformation and "lies to justify Putin's war."

Several large technology companies, such as Google and Microsoft, have blocked media supported by the Russian government, such as RT and Sputnik.

Leaving Ukraine aside, Musk did not reveal which countries asked Starlink to block Russian media.

Despite not blocking Russian media, Elon Musk had previously sent SpaceX's Starlink satellite to Ukraine, to shore up the country's disrupted internet connection.

This was announced by SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, after a call for help from Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Mykhailo Fedorov on Saturday (26/2/2022).

Express Support to Russian and Ukrainian People
Fedorov, who is also Ukraine's Minister of Digital Transformation, tweeted Musk asking SpaceX to activate the Starlink broadband satellite to complement the country's internet services.

"@Elonmusk, when you try to colonize Mars, Russia tries to occupy Ukraine! While your rockets land successfully from space, Russian rockets attack Ukrainian civilians!," wrote Fedorov.

Reported by Euronews, Sunday (27/2/2022), after a few hours, Fedorov got the answer. "Starlink service is now active in Ukraine. More terminals on the way," Musk tweeted in reply.
