Elon Musk asks SpaceX to keep Starlink from becoming a target for invasion of Ukraine

SpaceX owner Elon Musk has asked his company, which provides Starlink satellite assistance for communications networks in Ukraine, to exercise caution and protect the use of the service so as not to become a target for Russian attacks.

Elon tweeted that SpaceX would only activate the Starlink service if needed and place its satellites away from settlements and if necessary avoid visual detection.

"Important warning: Starlink is the only non-Russian communication system still functioning in parts of Ukraine.

So the chances of being targeted are high. Please use with caution," Elon Musk said on his Twitter account as quoted by Reuters on Friday.

The tweets come days after an internet security researcher revealed the potential for a communications satellite not originating in Russia to be a potential target for air strikes in the wake of Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Starlink is now a reliable satellite for communications in Ukraine after the Russian invasion damaged the communications systems previously available in Ukraine.

On Saturday (26/2), Elon Musk said Starlink was activated in Ukraine and SpaceX was sending more terminals to the country.

Elon made the remarks in response to a request by a Ukrainian government official who asked Musk to provide the embattled country with Starlink stations.

On Monday, Ukraine said it had received a donated Starlink satellite internet terminal, but an internet security researcher warned this could be a Russian target.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Mykhailo Fedorov thanked Starlink for keeping his cities connected and allowing emergency services to operate.

But the Deputy Prime Minister said Ukraine still needed generators to keep Starlink's services up and running because Russia's attack on infrastructure had a major impact.
